I Love Lucy
posted November 3, 2009 - 3:11pmWhy is everyone always so angry? I mean, people are downright nasty. Maybe I'm exaggerating or making too much of attitudes these days, but I don't think so. People are just plain angry.
I've been trying since August to get a $17.95 charge taken off of my credit card that I never made. Every snotty customer representative I have spoken to has had some likability issues. Each time I called, I was put on hold for several minutes, asked the same questions, and told they cannot help me because I needed to call the business first and cancel my account. I told them I never had and did not now have an account with this business. Nevertheless, they could not help me. They seemed angry at me for calling.
Ok, so I called the business, and asked the next lady with a hair across her butt if it was possible to cancel an account I never opened. She must have thought I was joking, because we were disconnected. Being the persistent glutton for punishment I am, I redialed and got another pissy representative who angrily told me I could not cancel an account I never had. I thanked her and called the credit card dispute line back.
Of course, I never get the same person, so I calmly went over my entire complaint with the newbie, even throwing in a little humor. She was not amused when I said I hoped she had the recorder running because I didn't think I had the stamina to go through it all one more time.. When I finished, she sniffed and told me I would have to cancel my account. I told her I didn't have an account to cancel. She said I must have opened one because I was charged $17.95 for it. She then proceeded to explain to me in meticulously exaggerated pronunciation what I would need to do.
By the time I had finished meticulously explaining to her what she could do, I was disconnected. There must have been a problem with my phone, I figured, because I kept getting disconnected. I made a note to call the phone company tomorrow. I then called the business back, feeling a lot like Lily Tomlin.
That time, I got a woman who sounded like she knew her stuff. I told her I needed to cancel an account that I never opened. "Yeah, we get these all the time", she snapped. I gave her the required information and stroked her a bit by telling her if she could pull this off, I'd write her boss and tell him how great she was. She said, "Honey if you write my boss and tell him what I'm about to do, I'll get canned. I'd advise you to keep this quiet." She somehow managed to cancel my account, I thanked her and she said, "yeah yeah."
So I called the dispute people back. I got another newbie. I told the newbie I canceled the account that I never had. She told me she was not familiar with my case. I told her to just stand up and holler "Canfield! $17.95!" She put me on hold and we got disconnected again.
I called back and finally got someone with whom I was on a first name basis. Lucy was just a little snippy with me, but she finally agreed to submit my dispute for a refund. She was adamant about how hard she worked on my behalf through her supervisor, blah. blah, blah. When she was done venting, she scolded me for hanging up on her before, so I told her the music she played for the twenty minutes sucked, and I couldn't stand it any longer. There was a moment of silence before she laughed. She actually laughed, like she liked me.
Huh. Glad my misfortune brightened up her day, I thought. Well, at least she hung up with a smile on her face. Out of all those miserable condescending piss ants I spoke with, only Lucy took time out of her mundane job of handling complaints and disputes to crack a smile.
For that, I love Lucy.
