I Taught My Son To Get Organized in 3 Steps

His bag was stuffed with numerous documents of different subjects that he is currently studying in his school. The issues he faced were misplaced of homework to be done and most important missing homework which he needs to submit to his teacher. It was good to show him how to get organized and see the benefits.

#1. Purchase plastic transparent folders for each subject matter. This is the first step to getting organized. This can be purchased from the school bookshop or bookstore. It is advisable to get a few extra folders as some of them may tear easily. After purchase, use a permanent marker to write down the subject name at the top corner of the folder to separate each from the other.

#2. Place each subject documents on each folder. Pick up all the subject homework and documents from the school bag and then place each subject documents on its respective folder. Do this until all the documents are distributed on each folder but do not file in yet.

#3. Prioritize the documents for filing. For each subject folder, pick up all the documents and re-arrange by date or priority. Whichever needs attention is placed at the top while others under it. For example, if there is a homework that needs to be done, that should be placed at the top while those completed ones are placed below it. Another example is school circulars for parents' attention should be placed at the top while earlier ones at the bottom. Once this is done, the subject documents are filed into the folder accordingly.

Now that this is done, the demonstration is complete. When placing the folders into the bag, I interacted with my son on the benefits of doing this exercise. This is really satisfying as I desire him to grasp the importance and difference it makes to his school life and studies.

The situation may differ from others. Please share with me your comments or better tips.

My daughter is a free ranging chicken...

Her backpack becomes a nightmare after a week of school.  I have an expanding folder that we move things into after each grading period.  That keeps her folders from tearing since they get stuffed with too much paper.  This way, if a graded paper is missing we know where to find it. At the end of the year, she pitches what she doesn't want.

My son's high school doesn't have lockers so absolutely everything has to remain in his backpack.  Can you imagine what that looks like at the end of every day!
