Who doesn't want to be a brilliant gay male wizard who runs a school of magic within a castle?
Kilkenny castle in Ireland
Albus Dumbledore is a character made popular by the Harry Potter book and movie series. From the imagination of J.K. Rowling, he is one of many intricately detailed characters that most of us have come to love. Dumbledore, however, stands out in my mind as one who is most admirable for the traits he possesses.
Besides being gifted with magic, Dumbledore is also clever, kind, and above all, humble. It's his humility that I admire the most.
He's not afraid to admit that he isn't perfect. He's probably the most gifted character Rowling created in her series, even greatly admired for his brilliance by the far too intelligent Hermione. Yet, he is also the one most likely to say outright that he's made a mistake and to take full responsibility for his short-comings.
We should all strive to be so humble. He doesn't dwell on what he's done wrong in his life, nor does he allow it to wreak havoc on his psyche. Rather, he embraces his mistakes, and takes responsibility for having committed them, even admitting fully that there are certain things he can't face.
When we fear something, even if it's information that we don't think we could handle knowing, we tend to fight against the possibility. Not Dumbledore. Dumbledore admits to the possibility, and to the fear he feels that it may prove accurate. He admits that he just can't face it, and does so without screaming at the top of his lungs.
He fears neither death, nor pain. He cleverly works out plans, and cleverly deciphers the meanings of seemingly mysterious elements. He is talented in his magic, but doesn't believe that he is the best at everything and worthy of more honor then any other man. He controls his anger and fear to the best of any mans ability, not allowing it to control him. And, above all, he has reached a point of enlightenment as a human being that has allowed him to eradicate arrogance and accept his imperfections.
I'd like to say that I emulated all those many beautiful qualities.
