I was born in the seventies
posted September 8, 2006 - 11:52amI was born in the seventies, grew up in the eighties, came into my own in the nineties, and will die in the next century and had the sixties shoved down my throat. We are at the beginning of a new century and millennium and can’t help but drowned
in the beliefs of people holding on to antiquated philosophies from the past four decades. Actually that is partially untrue, the nineties was pretty close to being bereft of any new philosophies. Let’s start with the sixties and eternal hell left from it. A decade defined mainly by two years at the butt of it. Peace, Love, and making sure nobody forgets about Woodstock. This decade gave us the hippies, the death of Camelot, and the moon landing. Your decade entrenched in hope but squandered in time, a time of great upheaval in the United States of America. “Hell, we watched the war over our TV dinners.” Your icons died of drug overdoses and ours of a self inflicted bullet wound. I use the word icons because to us heroes are an ancient term better used for Greeks than by us.
We live in a post-modern world we my generation has been so braided by what you like we have lost the connection to the natural, to the real. We name things after stuff we see on television and know from book. We are so busy celebrating anniversaries and reliving of past events we don’t have time to invent our own traditions. Now, we are heading in the time of our lives where we are starting to look back at our lost youth and wonder where our contributions. And every time a little spark of ingenuity comes out it is bought up and by a company and exploits it and us. Everything we have is Independent and Alternative except that has become the norm and we are left confused without a foothold into ourselves and our sense of self expression.
Now is the time when we start to come into our own with our families and as the major consumers but we sit at home and watch channels dedicated to the reruns of your life not ours. We have a channel that tells us what music to like and how to dress owned by major corporation owned by someone over fifty. Still because of the cloud of ignorance we sit there and accept that these good 20 somethings on television. Know what is good for us. We watch shows that makes us out as stupid slackers that don’t care or as we care more about the shoes we wear then the crime of the week. Though we are jaded by a media of “if it bleeds it leads” mentality we are stupid.
What does the future hold for us and the generations after us. If we do not allow original thought the fester and find it’s own path before it is bought up and put in a sitcom how will know who we are and who are the characters lost on television. So where does that leave us on the verge of one of three things that can happen in this country. The first is that this becomes a cycle and we fuck our children over like we were intelligentsia wise. Which would mean as wild as the children get the world follows and uses it for a Gap Ad. The second is that the world has a major turn and mental repression comes back in style. Where to see and do something wrong is sinful and wrong not understood by the masses. Which is worse I am not sure but at least with the second one we could create people of real creative thought. Only when there is an obstacle will one think of a way around it.
