IBM takes on Microsoft and Adobe: Platform wars.

RWW has reports about the latest at IBM camp, something big is about to happen there. IBM is about to make a “killer platform” that will be the next big hit, and it could be Microsoft’s or Adobe’s worst nightmare. The giant IT Company is working on a project called Blue Spruce. The IT Company claims that blue Spruce will be the next evolution of the browser platform. IBM’s Blue Spruce is fully Open Standards based; it is squarely aimed at challenging the proprietary rich internet platforms of Microsoft’s Silverlight and Adobe’s Flash. First I want to make it clear IBM is not net developing or making another browser but a Browser Platform. What IBM doing here is to create a fully browse based application development platform. The IT Company has just announced that it will commit itself heavily to browser based applications. IBM’s platform got an edge here, its Blue Spruce is based on Open Standards technologies, and it could work with any existing browsers such as Safari, Mozilla Firefox and Even Microsoft IE. IBM’s very own Blue Spruce will use the Webkit Open Source Engine, its utilized Open Ajax Metadata and its runs on Linux and MacOS X (Don’t expect the preferred OS in the platform to be Microsoft Windows). Right now Blue Spruce is in closed beta and it’s not yet complete or even has not been shown publicly, it’s not yet fully operational. IBM claims it’s in closed beta because the IT Company is creating applications for a number of customers like hospitals, the Company main focus is on finance, heavy industry and health. IBM has been working on an electronic health record for the medical industry. This could part of IBM big push to browser based applications. As the Blue Spruce matures, we could expect to see IBM working on its application development efforts service. IBM main strategy is quite simple it wants the browser platform to become the platform for applications thus threatening the business of companies like Microsoft and Adobe, which still rely on desktop applications. What exactly IBM doing here? Why are they heading for browser? We could expect more on Blue Spruce; it got a lot of potential and functionality. Blue Spruce got an Ajax based mashups. IBM is a huge supporter Open Ajax and IBM it’s very keen in this kind of technology. The most striking thing about this platform its allows multiple users to interact with the browser’s components (mashups, video, audio etc.) in real time and see each other changes, guess what! It’s all happening on the same browser page. The platform will allow customers to do “live meetings” and collaborate on whatever applications they got all within the same browser page. Rumors are rife on the web that Blue Spruce is an Open Source project. IBM described Blue Spruce as a community source project because it’s built on Open Standards; it will allow contributions from third party developer. IBM is mainly focused on a more Open industry approach and its betting hard on Blue Spruce to become the platform of tomorrow’s applications, IBM will sure to thrive on this business.
