If Christmas Was Not A Holiday In India!

If Christmas Was Not A Holiday In India!

That's a question which has been lingering in my mind for some time. I mean, it's a day all the government servants look forward to. Not only Christmas, the Government employees also look forward to Id, Mahavir's birthday, Guru Nanak's birthday, Bhuddha Purnima, Onam, Pongal and Holi etc. It comes down to nineteen holidays in 2008. And, mind you only three of those holidays are of national significance, Independence day, Republic day and Gandhi Jayanti, the rest are all to do with some religion or the other.

Sixteen holidays to placate various religions? It does not end there. There is Ambedkar Jayanti, which is always announced as a holiday one day prior to the actual day. That is to take care of the Dalits, the backward classes.

I have a feeling it is the holidays that unite the country. Now what would happen if the holidays of the other religions, I mean, any religion were just stopped. Do you think anyone would even come to know of the important days in other religions. If someone's kid is not going to get a gift from Santa, do you think the kid will even bother to ask who Santa is. The boss, in the office, do you think he would bother about a person's religious requirements. One can always pray after work hours, can't he?

Will someone burst crackers on Diwali if the day is not a holiday? They can always get away saying they did not have time. Even the kids will site home work for not being able to join friends for bursting crackers.

Ultimately, since our childhood we all have been brainwashed into thinking that all the festivals are a good thing because we get holidays for them. All the religious greats have been etched into our memory as greats, because of the holidays we have been getting all this while. If they had not been great, we would not have got holidays for them. The holiday makes the person or the occasion great. No one could care less otherwise.

It has it's positive side. We all are united even with different religions, customs and traditions because of the single fact that all of us get a holiday irrespective of who is celebrating the occasion and by that we are also encouraged into trying to understand the greatness of the occasion and also partake in the festivities. God bless the man who thought of such a wonderful idea to unite the people of this country.

What would happen if the festivals of one particular religion were not given importance in the schedule of closed holidays? I shudder to think of the answer. That religion will be slowly erased from the memory of the people and then from the history books and finally from this land. The phrase Unity in Diversity will not be able to stand for long and become Unity in Known Diversities.

The Father, The Son, and the Holy Spirit=3

While some call this the Godhead or Holy Trinity, it's like three gods in one. JOIN XOMBA IF YOU HAVE SOMETHING TO ADD!

Christianity does not have three Gods. You discredit yourself so easily.

Thailand is the same with

Thailand is the same with Buddhist, Hindu and Chinese holidays! Throw in a few Christian and Muslim festivals and it's amazing there are any working days left :-) Money for your Thoughts - join now OWO-BV

Festivals and Holidays

You throw up nice a nice point, taprial. I could well imagine if all holidays were canceled here in India, all hell could break loose at work. Holidays are so much valued that in a way there would hardly be anything to look forward to. Not only do people look forward to the holidays, they very much adore a holiday that happens to be on a suitable point in the week. A holiday on a Monday or a Friday is much more valued and adored than the one which is forlorn in the middle of the week. The prefix-suffix culture pervades all requirements, if you know what I mean. The festival becomes more or less adorable depending upon the what time of the week the corresponding holiday happens to be. Nice to have holidays ! +1

Can't Please All the People All the Time

Hey what's that saying, "You can please some of the people some of the time, but not all of the people all of the time." That is indeed a lot of gods, and goddesses to appease. And I bet each and every Hindu has a favorite one too! Anyway, Christians believe in only 1 God, like the Jewish people do. But they believe in that 1 God there are 3 persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It's called a mystery, so it is accepted on faith, not because it's easy to understand. Just wanted to clear that up! Still like your article!

"The Hindus

have a total of 36,000,000 Gods and Goddesses combined. The Muslims have only One God. The Christians have three Gods. And lets not forget the Jain and the Buddha." That makes a grand total of 36,000,006 Gods in India to appease, according to the book "The White Tiger" written by Aravind Adiga, which has won the booker prize. We really don't have those many days in a year to appease all of them! If you were to follow the Hindu religion, one would never get to work at all!

It's the economy

People will commercialize any and everything for money and it is all sanctioned by the governments for the sake of the economy. Whenever the earth does get destroyed, it might just well be started by all the money in this world catching fire. Thanks for the comment WLP Bare Essentials

You have a good point!

You have a good point no matter what country you are from. I get upset with people in the US who want seperation of Church, and State, but if you suggest that they don't get Christmas off, they have a fit. I also get upset over the commercialization of Christmas without recognizing its religious aspects. Thanksgiving isn't even over with and the stores have all their Christmas trees up!
