Ignorance, Knowledge, Honor, Duty, and Hell (Random Thoughts)
posted January 2, 2009 - 9:24amIt has been said that "Ignorance is bliss", I disagree.
I have always sought knowledge. From the time when I was young I have wanted to know how things worked and why people do what they do. I still ask the questions, but now the answers bring me less
joy.
It has also been said that "the road to hell is paved with good intentions". I have learned that most people believe that they are good, but I have seen so called "Good People" rationalize and justify unspeakable evil, and as a result over time I have learned to see the world in darker shades of gray.
All knowledge is power, and it is in our application of this power that we define ourselves. Power and strength bring freedom, the freedom to do as we should, or to do otherwise.
This freedom brings us a responsibility to use our power ethically. It is the ethical responsibility of those whom posses the knowledge, the power, the strength, and the freedom to respect those who are less endowed with any or all of these characteristics.
It is the duty of the strong to protect the weak, even against those who are stronger. Sometimes doing ones duty feels like standing naked and alone on a beach, trying to hold back the tide.
I live my life by a code of honor,
I do the best I can, but can it ever be enough?
Will I ever know if it is?
