I'm Singing (or Dreaming) in the Rain

I'm Singing (or Dreaming) in the Rain

Lights on, eyes watching, front and center stage. Sure sounds like a big moment. And for most people, there are few more nerve-racking situations than having all eyes on you. But if you are an entertainer, or a “showman,” front and center stage is your arena. And for a reserved guy like me, being a showman is my “dream job.”

Having an escape in life is not important; it is essential. We all have our hobbies and activities, but a true escape enables one to be in a world away from life’s daily rigors. For me, I read and write. Words, particularly stories, captivate and often take one's mind to fascinating places. The reader or writer engages with characters and feels their inner emotions. Now imagine being a character. Imagine being the person or thing that engages and captivates the reader, listener, or viewer. That is a showman.

A showman does not mean just a singer, a dancer, or an actor — a showman means one who does it all. My showman skills — or severe lack thereof — were quickly realized in my high school choir and a few homemade “scary” movies filmed with some childhood friends. The choir experience I will spare. (Simply: the choir sounded harmonious when my vocals were silent.)

As for the homemade flicks, my friends and I made them for a high-school class, and I tabbed myself as lead actor. The thought of fulfilling a different persona, along the likes of Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump or Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne, fascinated me. However, when the small video camera’s red light started blinking, this fascination remained solely and only a thought. My nerves kicked in, the acting turned our scary theme into a horror movie satire, and I immediately accepted that neither Broadway nor Las Vegas would be my future workplace.

But my inability to mirror Fred Astaire’s, Sammy Davis, Jr.’s, Julie Andrews’, Frank Sinatra’s, and Gene Kelly’s singing, dancing, acting skills makes the showman craft that much more enchanting and beautiful. It is a craft I yearn for and deem as the ultimate escape. However, it is something I can only appreciate as an outsider.

I love my escape, I love my job, but both are my reality. And, unfortunately, reality is no dream.

Thank you!

Thank you, everyone, for all of your gracious comments. This wasn't a contest to me -- it was an opportunity to convey my feelings on that true "dream job." People who know me well recognize my passion for showmanship (especially in the cinema).  Thanks, again, and go Xomba!

This was great, and made me laugh! Loved this part: (Simply: the choir sounded harmonious when my vocals were silent.). Congrats on your win!

Lol -- Too Kind!

Well that's very kind of you! But you're exactly right: We've found our own stage to showcase our writing passion. Thank you, Xomba!

I enjoy reading your great stuff, BlogWriter!

Based on looks alone

You could have been a model or an actor, based on looks alone. However, know that your "showmanship" shows up in your writing. It is a skill you have mastered beautifully. Now if only you could find a stage to showcase it. Oh, yeah, you did – Xomba.

Hope you find lots of fans.
