Image Format Conversion Tips
posted June 5, 2007 - 4:43pm From time to time you will find out that you need to change your existing digital images from one graphics format to another, be it for printing purposes, web display or whatever. This is actually quite a simple operation that can be done in all image-editing software in just
a few minutes.
In order to convert your image file to another format you will first need some sort of image-editing software, luckily if you are using Microsoft Windows you have a program called MSPaint or simply Paint which can easily and quickly convert from one file format to another.
Nowadays nearly every operating system comes packaged with some standard image-editing software that will be able to handle this task. Other popular image-editing software includes Adobe Photoshop, PrintShop Pro and Pixel Image Editor for Mac OS. Many image-editing software menus will look similar to the one shown here (image 1).
After you open the image-editing software click on the File menu where you will have an Open option. This will open an existing image file and allow you to convert it to another format. When you click on Open, a Browse window (image 2) will appear and you then need to navigate to where your image is saved. Notice that, at this point, as there are no images open some of the options are ‘grayed out,’ which means they are unavailable for use right now.
Once you have the image open it is extremely easy to save it into another file format. First, click on File again, the same place you opened the image from, and you will now see (image 3) that the options which were ‘grayed out’ previously are available. So click on Save As… which will provide you with a way to save the image into another file format. You will be presented with a Save As window (image 4) which will allow you to save the file where you want it. Below the main window there are two fields, Filename and Format. In the first type the name that you want to save the image as, do not worry about the file extension (the .jpg, etc.) just yet. The Format field is a pull-down menu that will have a list of supported file formats. Choose the one you wish to save as and click on it. Then, once you are certain you have the desired location, name and format, click the Save button in the lower right next to the Filename field and your image will be saved into the new format. You have successfully converted your image to a different format!
