Imaginative Things To Do With All Those Unsold Cars

Imaginative Things To Do With All Those Unsold Cars

From pricey luxury sedans to popular hybrid cars, automobiles made overseas are stacking up at ports and parking lots around the United States as supplies far outstrip demand amid the nation's worst auto market in more than 25 years.

Toyota spokesman Mike Goss said inventory had been pushed to "unacceptably high" levels that would take 80 to 90 days of sales to clear.

That is still less than the 115-day supply of inventory on average for General Motors Corp, Ford Motor Co and Chrysler LLC, but it is double Toyota's inventory levels of just a year earlier.

OK, so does there come a time when the cost of storing the cars becomes uneconomical for the automakers? Could we see cars being given away just to reclaim the land? Can we help these poor car makers?

What would be some fun things to do with all these unwanted cars?

If we took the tyres off we could use them as trains or roller-coaster rides.

We could distribute them as public art in parks and strange places - such as no-parking spots - like those coloured cows in Amsterdam and other cities.

One canny lady beat the financial crunch by letting customers smash plates - for a fee. What would be better than paying for a few baseball bats and having a smashing time at the expense of a brand new car?

Mind you, with the housing crisis still in full swing we may see the latest in bijoux mobile homes - no semi-detached please!

sleeping rough in a luxury car

Some amazing stories! So much for being "imaginative", looks like reality has accelerated before I'd even fired up. Thanks guys. In Thailand many peripatetic workers sleep in cars and vans and, well, under the stars even, but it's a tropical country. I wouldn't like to sleep in a car in Britain during winter. Parking lots are the new tract housing?

I feel badly for people having to live in their cars, particularly if the car is a compact or subcompact and there are more than one in it. Still, living in one's car in a parking lot is still preferable to being out-of-doors. When I lived at the YMCA in San Diego for a few months after I left the Navy back in 1996, there was one fellow who had a job but not enough money to pay rent. He paid for a membership at the Y, kept a change of clothes in his locker, and put the rest of his stuff in a storage unit. He slept outdoors at night and returned to exercise, take a shower/shave, and change into clean clothes for work the next morning. He kept this up for several months until he got back on his feet. (Fortunately, he did it with the mild climate in San Diego. I could not imagine trying to do it in Minneapolis or Boston.) I believe Darwin's Laws will be in full-force as soon as the economy goes further south, which it might. Those who are able to overcome and adapt to their new financial situation will survive, while those who cannot will not. There are lots of opportunities for people to move past the current situation, if they keep their minds and options open. JOIN XOMBA IF YOU HAVE SOMETHING TO ADD!

Parking Lots

In Phoenix, there has been dealers that have gone out of business (General Motors) and are now renting their parking lots to guess who? The Toyota dealers who ran out of room to park their cars. Unfortunately there are a lot of people living in their car. On the news there was one California town who opened their city's parking lot to single women(and posted a guard) who lived in their cars and needed a safe place to park at night. I have wondered about this over supply of cars. I suspect the dealers will have to eventually drop the price of cars and take a loss so they will sell. Cute article
