The Importance of Reading Aloud

The Importance of Reading Aloud

I have been trying to get my son to read aloud for quite some time now. I ask him to read aloud his lessons in preparation for his examinations, but he just doesn't seem to understand the importance of reading aloud.

Since the time I remember, in my childhood, my father used to read aloud stories to us from comic books or other stories and I really enjoyed listening to his voice. He is an avid reader of books himself and so I guess the habit rubbed on to all of us too. I started reading books as soon as I could read on my own and found them to be very entertaining, much more than watching a movie.

Reading aloud has lots of benefits and plays an important role in improving the vocabulary, knowledge of the outer world as also the knowledge of the language. One learns to pronounce words the way they are meant to be read.

Voice modulation is very important while reading aloud so as to convey the exact meaning of the sentences in the correct context. Laying emphasis on the right syllables of a word or a word in a sentence can help in conveying the right expression. Also being able to read all the words clearly and distinctly helps other people to understand what you are reading and even imbibe the knowledge gained hitherto.

What is the importance of reading aloud? There has been a lot of studies and research on this subject and the findings suggested that the literacy growth was higher. The Commission on Reading came out with a report in 1985, "Becoming a Nation of Readers" which stated that the “single most important activity for building knowledge for their eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children”.
Refer to this article for more details regarding its importance:

Literacy begins at home. If you want your children to be able to enjoy the experience of reading books, then you need to show them how reading books can be a "pleasureful" activity by reading aloud to them. Books with colorful pictures or illustrations can add a lot of fun and meaning and be attractive to a child. Teach your children the "value" of books. One of the greatest benefits that reading aloud can develop for all children, is a background knowledge that helps them achieve a far higher level of understanding that goes beyond the classroom.

It is very important to select the right kind of books to read aloud to your child. The language, vocabulary and knowledge in the book should be rich and bountiful. Reading aloud forces your child into active thinking and imagination. The child learns the skills of having conversations related to the story and this will help in building the self confidence and self esteem and the road to success later in life. Reading aloud is the best way to promote literacy and reading habits in young children. It is the best way to learn and understand a language and gain the skills required to read and write. It provides a window to knowledge that is far reaching and goes beyond classroom teachings. So, don't hesitate to read aloud to your child and also encourage them to read aloud.

Re: The Importance of Reading Aloud

I completely agree. I can relate from both ends of the spectrum. My son, who is older, had no problem picking up on reading, beginning with rhyming stories, like Dr. Seuss. As a result, he has always done well in school. But my daughter had more difficulty. I blame my ex-husband (for just about everything, to be honest, but in this case) for sabotaging my efforts at reading aloud. I had about 2 to 2 1/2 hours from the time the kids got home from school to the time he got home from work and turned up the TV full blast until at least 11:00pm. It made reading aloud impossible. Not to mention miserable. However, I have made made great progress with my daughter, and my ex, lately by having them use the closed-captioning on the TV. So there is no need to have it going full blast. My daughter is now asking me questions about programs, or topics on programs she watches, whereas before she really had no interest in talking to me about things. For the longest time, I thought she was autistic, that's how withdrawn she was. But now she reads more often and is really improving her speech and critical thinking skills. It's wonderful to see.

Very well said, Wdzzz

Yes, that's one point to consider too. That's how most of the medical students manage to remember so many details and retain that knowledge through their college days....Imagine the amount of data that they need to store in their brains for all exams...! Thanks for the input, Wdzzz. I appreciate it. Get money writing articles on Xomba Here

Thanks a lot MJ :-))

Yes, its so much fun to read aloud to your kids. I did a lot of that right from the time my son was a baby. I started with nursery rhymes and gradually worked my way up to stories and later books too. Even now, he loves reading "together" rather than reading alone. But, at least I have been successful in getting him to "Read"! That's more important. Reading aloud also helps you to learn more and maybe remember all the things that you may have forgotten long ago. Yes, its really sad when parents don't have time for their kids. I think the greatest sin a parent can commit is to deprive their kids of their attention and love. Nobody else can fill in that "void". Get money writing articles on Xomba Here

Reading Aloud

Great article rawnak. Yes, it is so important to read aloud especial for those who primarily learn through hearing. In studies it is been proven that retention is improved when a person hears the information, then improved again by repeating it, then again by writing it, then again by teaching it, and most of all by doing it. Great Heads Up Article Rawnak

This is a wonderful article!! +1 Some of my fondess memories are of when the boys were younger and the three of us would read together. Taking turns with paragraphs and pages. We would then discuss what we read or ask questions as we read. Great bonding time this is too! I also see that many parents (in the more affluent areas of California) are busy fund raising or volunteering for this community project or that and do not have time for their childrens' education. They hire tutors. MJ - Sending happy thoughts and Smiles! Avatar: Betrayal and Retribution http://www.valkyrieart.com/Poser1.html

An Era of Modern Technology

Today everything is made easier for parents to manage their kids (at least the ones who are rich and can afford all kinds of gizmos and stuff). Most parents these days are busy chasing their careers and don't have enough time for kids who are either left in a child care center or with a house maid at home. And since in India, the concept of child care isn't that prevalent...It's much cheaper and easier to find a maid to look after the child. Obviously the maid doesn't do much for the child's upbringing other than just "Taking Care". The only "learning" such kids get is from "schooling". Besides, not everyone in this day and age have the habit of reading themselves and so they do not realize the importance of "reading aloud" to a child or the benefits of reading aloud either. One can catch problems of reading and writing in children at a very young age if we pay enough attention.....Children need a lot of patience. Thanks Mia for the comment and for reading this... Get money writing articles on Xomba Here
