In a Turnaround, U.S. Fertility Rate is Up

For the first time in a few decades, the U.S. fertility is up. An estimate from the National Center for Health Statistics says that the U.S. fertility rate hit 2.1 last year, meaning that "the nation has reached the rate of births needed for a generation to replace itself." < p>

This is a turnaround from the declining birth rate previously seen in the United States, and a major contrast to other countries that are desperately trying to increase their birth rate. Many European countries are grappling with low birth rates, and last year Russia announced financial subsidies to women willing to produce children. Japan also offers a variety of benefits including subsidized day care to get women to have children.

Without getting into an immigration debate...

You compared the increase in the U.S. with the struggle of Europeans to maintain replacement birth rates. What you wrote only scratched the surface of the whole issue, including the makeup of each racial group contributing and social trends that govern the future of our country. It's one thing to pat ourselves on the back and say that our birthrate showed a slight increase. But, at what cost are we replacing our population? More is not necessarily better in this case. True,

the rise is because of immigrants having children. But they are residents nonetheless, so they count in the nation's fertility rate and birthrate.

The U.S. birthrate increase needs to be qualified

The native-born U.S. population is still in decline. The increase is due to the importation of immigrants--mostly illegal--from Mexico and points south, who have anchor babies in American hospitals and are granted de facto amnesty because of the loophole in the 14th Amendment. The danger to this importation is that the native population--whose income and taxes support the infrastructure of this country--is being squeezed out. Once we hit critical mass, our economic infrastructure will collapse from the sheer weight of demands placed on it from people who are not paying into it.
