India Premier League auction underway

India one-day captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and retiring Australia wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist were among the players to attract high bids in the early stages of the Indian Premier League player auction.

Chennai paid £750,000 for Dhoni, while Gilchrist attracted a bid of £350,000 from Hyderabad. < p>

Sri Lanka star Muttiah Muralitharan will line up alongside Dhoni at Chennai after a bid of US dollars £300,000, while fellow spinner Shane Warne was bought by Jaipur for US dollars £225,000.

Kolkata signed Pakistan paceman Shoaib Akhtar, and Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene will play for Mohali.

Each of the eight franchises have a total of US dollars 5million to bid at the auction, which is taking place electronically in Mumbai.
