Infection from Syphilis Rising!
posted April 29, 2008 - 2:27amAccording to the Department of Health between 2003-2007, the number of syphilis cases have increased. Based on statistics this is a whopping 160 percent increase. More particular rise was noted in men who have sex with men. This statistics was based on the State of Virginia alone.
The incubation time for the disease takes 10-90 days. Initially, a chancre appears at the site of infection and heals in a few weeks. This is somewhat painless. Since this is painless, some people tend to ignore the sign most especially that it does not hurt. Though most cases people go to the doctor right away for consultancy and treatment. Some chancre may occur in the vagina, anus, throat, mouth and may be unnoticeable.
If left untreated, secondary syphilis may develop which is usually a month later. It may come in the form of rash as in other diseases. This may be accompanied with fever, hair loss, headache, loss of appetite. Though it may disappear but may come back years later.
In 25 percent of untreated people, the disease may infect organs such as the brain, skin, stomach, heart. If it does affect the brain, it may be called Neurosyphilis. This condition can cause weakness, sensory problems, dementia and can be deadly.
It is very important to consult the doctor when this signs and symptoms appear to insure that proper treatment should be given to any infected person.
