1. Jessica Jones (November 20, 2015 – present)

Star cast: Krysten Ritter, David Tennant, Rachael Taylor, Mike Colter, Carrie-Anne Moss

No. of Seasons: 1

No. of Episodes: 13

Running time: 46-55 Minutes

Jessica Jones aka Marvel’s Jessica Jones is an American web TV series created for Netflix. This show is based on the Marvel comics character Jessica Jones. Ever since her accident as a teenager, Jessica Jones has achieved superhuman strength, and as time passed on and she became an adult, she decided to use her powers for good – to help the helpless. Unhappily, this leads to a tragedy after she encounters a mind-controller who goes by the name Kilgrave. Leaving her tragic past behind her, Jones starts over as a private investigator, digging up dirt on people as requested by her clients. That is until Kilgrave returns. To know more, you have to watch the series.

It is a show just as dark as “Daredevil” and just as gripping too. It is a series that is finally able to spotlight a female character whose defining feature isn’t her gender. Jessica Jones is more than that. She is a character that takes us through a journey as dark and twisted as Kilgrave himself and concludes with one of the best second-half of a series I have ever seen.

2. The Killing (April 3, 2011 – August 1, 2014)

Star cast: Joel Kinnaman, Mireille Enos, Billy Campbell, Michelle Forbes, Brent Sexton

No. of Seasons: 4

No. of Episodes: 44

Running time: 42–45 minutes (Season 1-3)55–59 minutes (Season 4)

The first thing I’d like to address is the talent of the actors in the show. With only a few limitations, there are some of the most believable acts I’ve ever seen on a television series. Particular standouts, in my opinion, were Brent Sexton (Stan Larsen), who played one of the strongest characters I’ve ever seen in any medium, be it film, television, or anything else. Of course, the two main characters also played very impressive characters, Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman as detectives Linden and Holder respectively. The huge cast of supporting characters were all worth mentioning as well.

Star cast: Essie Davis, Ashleigh Cummings, Miriam Margolyes

No. of Seasons: 3

No. of Episodes: 34

Running time: 60 Minutes

Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries are set in late 1920s Melbourne. On a purely practical level, it’s well-researched and shot perfectly in and around period Melbourne. Essie Davis represents Phryne Fisher and she is supported by a wonderfully Australian cast who are surely enjoying every minute of the production. It’s also delightful to get involved in an Australian TV series. It’s a brilliant show. The first word that springs to mind to describe it is Fun. The costumes, sets, characters, writing, all of it is terrific fun. Phryne Fisher is a modern heroine in a modernizing time. This show is one of the best mystery tv shows on Netflix.

Star cast: Brit Marling, Ian Alexander, Patrick Gibson, Emory Cohen, Paz Vega

No. of Seasons: 1

No. of Episodes: 8

Running time: 31-71 Minutes

I watched this series on Netflix, one episode after the other for the eight episodes and then looked for a review – found one but wasn’t happy with it.  The reviewer didn’t like the series, didn’t think it worked.  I, on the other hand, did like it and did think it worked. In the show, a woman returns, having been missing for seven years. She was blind when she disappeared but now can see. She recruits five people with whom she shall share her story.

Star cast: Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Winona Ryder, Finn Wolfhard, Natalie Dyer

No. of Seasons: 1

No. of Episodes: 8

Running time: 42-45 Minutes

I got my binge on and finished the first season of “Stranger Things”. The show hits all the right notes. It’s populated with good characters and, most importantly, it contains a sci-fi mystery that didn’t leave me scratching my head or trying to make excuses for it. This show is clearly a sci-fi series, but it also has horror elements within it. When you watch the series, you will find that there is something hidden in the darkness. A creature who makes you interested to know more about it and what its purpose is.

And, of course, there is a secret government agency that is behind the scenes as well, and that just makes things even more difficult for the folks at Hawkins. With all of these strange twists being pulled around, you will find yourself wanting to know the answers very quickly around the boys, who exactly Eleven and this monster is, and what is going on. The story opens at its own pace, but trust me by the end of the season you will be very satisfied.

Star cast: Glenn Close, Rose Byrne, Tate Donovan, Ted Danson, Zachary Booth, Noah Bean

No. of Seasons: 5

No. of Episodes: 59

Running time: 40-60 Minutes

I started watching the first episode, which highlighted the main characters; lawyer Patty Hewes (Glenn Close), her assistant Ellen Parsons (Rose Byrne) and the law firm Hewes & Associates, which is located in New York City. The opening of the first episode made me really excited about this show. Patty Hewes, who owns Hewes and Associates, a high-profile litigation firm, is trying to win a class action law suit against former CEO “Arthur Frobisher” (Ted Danson.).  I must say that the first episode was intelligently written, I wanted to see more, and this episode featured a lot of important details that will be the foundation of the entire season. To know more, you have to watch the whole series.

8. The Bletchley Circle (6 September 2012 – 27 January 2014)

Star cast: Anna Maxwell Martin, Rachael Stirling, Sophie Rundle, Julie Graham, Hattie Morahan

No. of Seasons: 2

No. of Episodes: 7

Running time: 45 Minutes

The Bletchley Circle is one of those rare historical dramas that combines modern writing styles (in this case, a murder mystery) with real emotional and psychological loyalty to the time-period. The plot is engaging and has enough credible twists to catch up the tension and accelerate the story.

The situation creates natural setbacks for the women, forcing them to risk their own safety. Believable tension is also found in the lives of the two women who are married. They can’t tell their husbands what they are doing which naturally arouses suspicion and creates other problems. The story is engaging from every angle and well worth watching.

10. The Expanse (November 23, 2015 – present)

Star cast: Thomas Jane, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Steven Strait, Dominique Tipper, Florence Faivre, Cas Anvar

No. of Seasons: 1

No. of Episodes: 10

Running time: 42-44 Minutes

This SyFy series is based on the series of books by James Corey. The setting is the solar system, a few hundred years from now. There are colonies on the moon and Mars, and “Belter” space stations, on Ceres and elsewhere. Someone is trying to raise tension between all the groups, someone is blowing up ships, someone has disappeared, and something is on the loose.

I haven’t read the books, but, despite these ten episodes covering events in more than one book (so I am told), the pace is glacial. They have spent a lot of money on the futuristic sets and weightless SFX, and they want the viewers to appreciate that. It’s a good series to watch on Netflix.

11. A Series of Unfortunate Events (January 13, 2017 – present)

Star cast: Neil Patrick Harris, Malina Weissman, Patrick Warburton, Aasif Mandvi, Louis Hynes, K. Todd Freeman

No. of Seasons: 1

No. of Episodes: 8

Running time: 42-64 Minutes

The popular book series A Series of Unfortunate Events gets the Netflix treatment and is finally brought to life in the manner it deserves. With Neil Patrick Harris headlining as the evil Count Olaf and Patrick Warburton as Lemony Snicket himself, there are a lot of great moments between them and the Baudelaire children in this fantasy world.

Patrick Warburton’s appearance throughout the show as Lemony Snicket, author of the original book series, added to the show’s unique humor, breaking the fourth wall and reminding the audience of the tragedy of the story of the Baudelaires. His tone and dark humor kept up the atmosphere of the book within the TV show, something that would have been hard to do if restricted to the dialogue of the ‘actual’ characters.  It’s entertaining and close to the books. Props to your Netflix and cast.

12. The Returned (March 9 – May 11, 2015)

Star cast: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, India Ennenga, Mark Pellegrino, Jeremy Sisto, Kevin Alejandro, Agnes Bruckner, Sandrine Holt

No. of Seasons: 1

No. of Episodes: 10

Running time: 43-46 Minutes

The original French series was first released in 2012 but then recreated as an American version recently in 2015, The Returned is based in a small mountain town in France of which several local people start returning from the dead despite dying years earlier.

It’s a fairly slow show to watch with more mysteries than action packed events, but this is one of the many reasons I enjoy watching it because of the hidden clues and secrets which eventually leads you to a conclusion about the sudden immortals coming back from the dead.  It’s rather ghostly at times which is why it can be considered a horror show but it’s more of a mystery/thriller with supernatural elements involved.
