9 Of The Best Websites For Your Spare Time
posted August 7, 2009 - 4:04pmDespite being of the opinion that people shouldn’t spend copious amounts of time staring at a screen - be it a TV or a computer monitor - I, myself, am still prone to wander aimlessly around the vast interwebs looking at pictures of things, or chuckling at comics or reading random bits and pieces. I can’t help it – all that knowledge, humour and news, all of those opinions and images – it’s just too tempting to pass up and let’s be honest; - the net provides a good source of escapism, even if it’s for 10 minutes. I was about to digress there but I won’t (for a change). I just wanted to share with y’all a few haunts on the world-wide-web that I have been known to frequent from time to time, ranging from education to internet comic strips to blogs. So, in no particular order, here are a few of the most interesting/funny/educational gems I found hiding in the nooks and crannies of the net; -
This is quite a chuckle inducing site. Featuring images and animated gif.s, this site is most definitely not safe for work at times – I don’t mean it’s incredibly offensive but if you’re of a sensitive disposition, tis probably best not to go here – although, in saying that, it does have pics of cute animals occasionally. Have I sold this website successfully? No, probably not.
An absolutely fantastic website from a perpetual nomad. Matt has been on the road for about two years or so and has been (seemingly) everywhere. This site has many decent articles about travel ranging from how to prepare for it to how to haggle as well as how to earn money on the road. Definitely one of the top 3 independent travel blogs out there.
Ah, I love this site. Having managed to compile just about every single word that Bukowski ever wrote, Bukowski.net is beautifully simple to navigate and even includes Mr Bukowski’s FBI files.
OoooOoo, I check this site just about every day. It’s ever so interesting. As Oddee itself says, “Oddee.com is an entertainment blog on oddities, attracting well over a million unique visitors each month. Focused on the odd, bizarre and strange things of our world, its daily articles and sections explore subjects from Science to Advertising and Technology; over 11 million pages are read at Oddee every month.” Absolutely everything is covered by this site and despite being educational in places, it’s not boring.
A collection of stunning photographs represent life in a stark, beautiful and sometimes haunting way. Even if you only look at a few of these photos, they’re sure to stay with you for awhile.
www.badassoftheweek.com
The owner of this site pays tribute to one badass person a week – he does it on such a way that I get to giggle my way through a considerable amount of learning. All sorts of people have whole pages devoted to their bad-assery including political figures (left & right), historical figures and fictional characters (Beowulf, Abraham Van Helsing, Samson).

A web-comic produced by some dude called Jeph Jacques involves a bunch of indie young folks and their daily small time adventures/snarkery. Tis pretty good actually. ^_^
I swear, enter at you own risk. This is the most addictive thing on the internet. …I sometimes leave this open so I can listen as I go about my interwebs business *shame* Four minutes and counting…
This one is kind of a cheat seeing as I only go here during November – that’s because it’s most active then. The reason for this is simple – there’s a challenge; you have to write a 50,000 thousand word novel in 30 days. That’s right and boy, is it hard…..fun though!
www.youtube.com/user/ThereBeMe
Now, Youtube is huge – it’s like a whole net in itself which is why what I’ve done here is post a link to my profile; so ye can have a look at everything that I’ve favourited. The videos here relate to science, humour, cute animals and surreal clips. Enjoy.
The web is such a big place that there’s no way I could have included all of the sites that I deem worthy of perusal – these are simply the ones that I visit on a daily or weekly basis.
