The Iran Problem - What Should We Do?
posted April 25, 2009 - 5:00pmIn recent months, there has been rapidly growing tension between Iran and the west over the Iranian nuclear program. The United States and Israel continue to assert that Iran's nuclear program designed to develop nuclear weaponry for use against Israel. Iran and Russia, however, claim that the nuclear program is designed for peaceful power only.
Iran has missiles that can reach Israel and nearly every European capital. If any one of these missiles were to be fitted with a nuclear warhead, the results could be devastating for hundreds of thousands of people.
Let me say, however, that I am all for the research and development of a peaceful nuclear power system in Iran. Nuclear power is clean, efficient and reasonably safe. A few nuclear power plants could power the entire region.
That said, in light of recent developments, it seems that any such nuclear development WOULD be used to create weapons. Even if the weapons were developed just as a last resort – much like the United States' nuclear arsenal – the Middle East is far too unstable to accommodate them.
Even if Iran had good intentions in developing the weapons systems, there is always a possibility of nuclear material and technology being inadvertently leaked. What if that nuclear technology were to be shared with terrorist organizations or hostile governments? In the Arab region, I'm sorry to say, that is an all-too-real risk that we cannot afford to take.
So, with that in mind, what should we do?
Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu has repeatedly said that Iran will NOT acquire nuclear weapons. Israel will stop them before that happens.
But here's the thing, Russia has said any attack on Iran will be viewed as an attack on Moscow. That's a problem.
Russia is now protecting Iran.
So, picture this: If Israel attacks Iran, the US is obligated – per our peace treaty – to protect Israel. If Russia declares war, China must do so as well – per the terms of the Russia-China military alliance.
The conflict would likely lead to all out war between the US / Israel and Russia / China / Iran.
So here's the question: Would attacking Iran actually be more dangerous? Or is it worse to do nothing?
Don't get me wrong. I DON'T want Iran to have nuclear weapons. The risks are too great for all of us.
But in light of what military conflict would arise, what course of action should the United States take? I'm interested in your opinions.
