Say what you will about the notion of citizens enacting the law directly via the public referendum process, but you have to admit it presents us with some interesting ironies.

Black American citizens turned out in record numbers to help usher in the first black U.S. President. As it turned out, the Obama win was large enough that he could have won with an historic LOW black voter turnout. However in California, exit polls showed that black voters overwhelmingly supported Proposition 8, the referendum that took away recently granted civil rights for homosexuals in the state; specifically, granting them the ability to marry their partners of choice. If blacks had voted for it the same percentage that whites voted for it, the proposition would have failed to pass.

The irony, of course, is considering the history of the American government denying blacks their civil rights, one would think that blacks would be less inclined than whites to deny the civil rights of another minority group. (It's akin to the apartheid style treatment of Palestinians by the government of Israel. One would assume that people who have suffered a history of mistreatment would be less likely to mistreat others.)

Anyway, there's a referendum happening in Switzerland, that if polls are to be believed, will see the passage of the legalization of prescription heroin on the one hand, but the rejection of the decriminalization of marijuana on the other hand.

In the interest of full disclosure, I must say, the heroin is maintenance/treatment dosages for addicts which trial programs have proven positively beneficial for society, and the Swiss police and legal system usual treat marijuana as if it is already decriminalized.

But still, it's pretty damn ironic if you ask me.
