Is a Federal Government Shutdown Possible?

Is a Federal Government Shutdown Possible?

It's that time of year again. Congress is rushing to head back home for Christmas and the threat of a looming government shutdown for fiscal year 2008 is raising it's ugly head.

Here we go again.

Now many folks argue that closing the government is no big deal. These folks appear to believe every government employee is just useless chaff. However, that's totally not true. Goods and services that Americans use every day are provided by our federal government. This huge machine, while not always well oiled, provides many essential things for the average American. Like air traffic controllers, FBI agents, State Department passport specialists, FDA investigators - you get the idea.

So Congress is arguing again. What's new about that? There are reports of Members refusing to speak to each. This really isn't good. If Congress chooses to adjourn for the Christmas Break without reaching a resolution on the budget, we could be facing a shutdown. Congress could also decide to pass a short-term budget resolution allowing agencies to remain open until they return to session in January.

Stay tuned for more drama. Hopefully, things will be resolved before a shutdown occurs.

I don't doubt safety must be a priority...

That's why I would rather have Congress not be paid until petty partisanship can be put aside and a REAL budget passed, as in "pay as you go". But, from what I've learned about the federal budget, it's all smoke and mirrors to keep the dollar afloat and consumer confidence up. Anything else that comes out of Washington is pure pork politicking and is the root cause for the current situation. While I empathize with support staff positions in Washington, I am also for smaller government. Such positions are going to be cut as pork is trimmed. There are certainly good, honest civil servants in federal service and I hope that those people won't be affected, but there are enough career bureaucrats and apparatchik that some good will be lost to clean out the bad.

I think it's a bad thing!!!

I was a fed for many years, working as a cartographer for the FAA and ocean service. These were safety related jobs. So if I wasn't working my FAA job, planes would have a difficult time taking off and landing without the aviation charts that I made daily. We were on a 50 day print cycle, so any time off screws the whole program. There are MANY jobs such as this throughout the government. The saddest part is Congress Members don't get canned, their staff does. It's a mess that I hope won't be repeated again. I worked the 1995 furlough as an essential employee and it really wasn't a cake walk. The Alternative Minimum Tax seems to be the sticking point this year. I don't believe Dubya is changing much from last years budget.

You say "Federal Government Shutdown" like it's a bad thing...

Under Dubya, our national deficit is at an all-time high, our armed forces are on more reckless military adventures, and welfare has become more of a career while our porous border continues to allow millions of more people to cross the border to overrun our already overburdened infrastructure. All of this took place by stealing more money from our children's future. If the federal government took the year off because it won't approve a new debt ceiling, at least it wouldn't do more damage. Personally, I believe that every member of the House and Senate should not be paid until a real budget is passed (as opposed to a 900-page book of pork, debt, and lies that none of them read, yet pass anyway).
