The largest sellers of bottled water in the U.S., Coke and Pepsi, agreed this year to state on their labels a little-known fact: that the water used in widely advertised brands such as Dasani is just plain old municipal water, the same stuff that comes out of your tap. Bottled water is a big seller on the mainland, but many people are trying to cut back, in large part because of the waste created by all those plastic bottles. I think San Francisco even banned bottled water in city business or something. Most areas of the U.S., I think have decent quality drinking water. The situation may be different in Hawaii... a chain of islands may not have many large-scale natural sources of fresh water for drinking.
