Is dogfighting and hunting equally cruel?

Is dogfighting and hunting equally cruel?

Michael Vick has recently struck a plea deal on the dog fighting charges against him. Then Stephan Marbury and the increasingly irrelevant NAACP came out saying that dog fighting is no worse than hunting. Were they correct in this comparison or were they using thinly veiled jabs at a predominately white cultural phenomenon (hunting)to excuse the actions of Mr. Vick?

I really can't argue that hunting is a cruelty free endeavor. People hunt simply for the sport of it or as a way to reconnect with their past and culture. But most of all people hunt for the thrill of the kill, plain and simple. It's primal, it's satisfying and it's ultimately what hunting is about.

Dog fighting is also primal and on some level satisfying. The viciousness of the fight causes adrenaline to rush through ones body and that feels good. It's the same reason people watch mixed martial arts and other human fight bouts.

Now with that said, does Mr. Marbury and the NAACP have a point? No! They were dishonestly using a possibly valid argument to excuse the actions of a man who believes laws do not apply to him. Further they carefully chose their argument to poke at a white cultural phenomenon in order to show how unfair the system and country is to a successful black man.

Personally I don't have a huge issue with dog fighting, hunting, or anything else like that. If it's what your into then so be it. But unfortunately for Mr. Vick dog fighting has been deemed by this society as immoral and ILLEGAL. He knew this and broke the law anyhow. That is why he should be put in jail, why he should lose millions of dollars and lose his contract in the NFL. He is not above the law. If he believed that dog fighting was an activity that should be allowed then he should have lobbied for it to be legal or conducted the activities in a country were it's legal. But to disregard the laws of this land just because he knows he has the money to finance such an activity is wrong. Mr. Marbury and the NAACP need to understand that Mr. Vick broke the law and pointing at a legal activity and saying "but they do it, why can't he?" is just plain childish.

On hunting...

I have never hunted before, but I have been roommates with and worked with those that have hunted. Also, I've been backpacking/camping up near Mount Shasta in Northern California with firearms for protection and have had decent firearms training in the Navy. I "get" the thrill of stalking the prey, moving in for the shot, and the rush of lining up the prey in the sights before pulling the trigger. From that perspective, I agree that hunting as a "sport" is hardly a sport because the prey doesn't shoot back. (Besides, how sporting could it be to sit in a tree stand and shoot at deer with a semi-automatic rifle?) For survival, however, the skills that one develops may save lives. I do like the idea of mixing up the "tools" to cross-train and bowhunting or making traps and snares for smaller game because a rifle may not always be available. Unfortunately, there are too many people whose idea of fun is not in harmony with Nature. Their vulgar actions serve as a stereotype for people that believe the worst of what survival training encompasses. _______________________________________________________ "Treason doth never prosper, what's the reason? Marbury is a Race-Baiter

Saying dogfighting is no different than hunting is like saying burning someone alive is no different than barbecuing a steak. The all-too-typical statement by Stephan Marbury of the NAACP is nothing more than race-baiting because a black man stood accused of a heinous crime and white men are allegedly (in the eyes of the NAACP) the source of all evil. _______________________________________________________ "Treason doth never prosper, what's the reason? Ignorance or Illness?

Is or Are? should this be humor?

Ignorance or Illness?

Thanks for sharing your opinion and outlook on this "important" social issue. Or something like that. I guess some people are satisfied with a "squirt" of adrenalin for a thrill? I can suggest lots of thrilling things that won't harm or kill other life entities. But it does truly scale and describe your outlook on a large domain of things. Reflectively, I think this was meant as some kind of compassionate posting. Therefore you win a little slack. If Mikey Vick had prepared and roasted the dogs and eaten them --maybe you could compare this to hunting. I have hunted and killed everything and every kind of legally accessible "game" and all of it before I matured mentally. I no longer hunt, and of the thousands of animals I killed and ate -- none were truly killed because I needed to have their lives for my sustanence. I wish I could have every 'shot' back. If you do not "need" to hunt for food -- then in my opinion -- you don't need to hunt. There is nothing sporting whatever about hunting -- at all. I wrote an article about the American Sportsman and polar bear. I favor giving the "sporting victim" at least a "sporting chance." The best way to do that is to get rid of all firearms for your hunt. Also, you must eat the body of your victim. For polar bear, it is hoped they can eat the hunter, on the sporting basis. I know of no way to give rabbits a "sporting chance" except perhaps to suggest the "sporting" human hunter be allowed only an axe and clothing. (Pants, shirt, shoes, coat.) Let him build his hunting tools from his environment. I disagree on the "thrill" of the kill. And just what would you know or imagine about that? I think Vick is Sick. Mentally immature; pure species baggage. Perhaps people who do not seem to grasp the idea of sport and a sporting chance need to be taken on a survivalist's hunt? To satisfy what you would think as a lust for killing something? We have strange customs and laws and have many carry-overs from our hunter-gatherer time. If you kill something for sport -- where is the sport? I think the perspective is an illness. With total collapse of civilization (which might be just ahead in the CO2 dominated world) maybe there will be animals that will hunt you -- or that you can hunt for food. Hints of Human Intelligence seem to pop up now and then, but this is not one of the nows. Thanks for giving us insight into your character, your brain, your "mind?" and thanks for the opinion. You have mine, as well. Good luck. Keep writing.

Dogfighting

Personnally, I find dogfighting very disgusting. Just training his beast to be lethal, and to earn more money, because some of em are betting a lot on those fight. Or even, it can be without money at all, just for the eyes' pleasure as they say... Wonderful thinking... Otherwise here in France, in our uncontrolled area, where people called "young" can do almost everything they want, a lot of prohibited dog are walking in the streets, whereas its totally forbidden by the Republic. Here in France, the State has declared forbidden certain classes of dogs, like pitbull or other even more dangerous than those one. But those guys thinks too to be up to the law and not concerned by humanity or whatever would make them thinks that what they are doing is simply silly and unminded.
