Is organic produce really worth more money?

Organic produce is worth the money if the price is reasonable for the product. Recently, prices for organic goods have been going down. It used to be that an organic lemon would cost four times as much as a regular one. Those prices no longer hold justification but perhaps twice as much is a price that consumers will be willing to spend for the added benefits.

Organic produce is supposed to be produced without harmful pesticides and chemical fertilizers. It does not take a rocket scientist to see what goes in the soil goes into the plant. The concentrations of these harmful chemicals vary by type of farming and type of produce. However, I believe that organic produce not only tastes better but is demonstratively healthy as well.

Organic produce would be a wise choice for children or the elderly who are especially affected by toxins in the food supply. Likewise, nursing mothers or those who are trying to recover from cancer may benefit from foods which are organically produced. Lastly, animals fed organic feed may have less toxins than those who don't consume the organic alternative. All organic food options should be looked at and the costs should be weighed appropriately.

Driving Prices Down Drives Local Growers Out

I'm not advocating blowing your paycheck on organic produce, but it's a great idea to look for locally grown foods since they have travelled less (fewer carbon emissions) and are fresher since they get to your stores faster. Unfortunately, some of the local farms can't afford to drive prices down as low as the big farms far away. It's a shame that there are many government food subsidies that help make junk food affordable, but won't help us afford quality, nutritious, locally grown produce.
