Is Ralph Nader's Bid for Presidency Providing a Real Choice?

Ralph Nader will run for president, he has announced. Is he really giving Americans for choice or will this ruin the chances (again) that the Democrats may have for return to power?

Nader has for long been well-known and well respected as being for the little guy against the giant faceless corporations. His campaign against unsafe cars, taking on the mammoth General Motors led to a greater automobile safety.

He has also done much about environmental, health and safety issues.

But is he a truly political force, or is he tilting at windmills? He has a certain amount of support, but that has only led to votes being diluted. In the 2000 elections, Al Gore would probably have won, had some votes not be diverted to Nader.

Is the same thing going to happen again, when there seems to be just that bit of a chance for the Democrats to make a comeback? His giving Americans more choice may be no more than giving an illusion of choice.

Is it a wasted vote to vote for Nader?

Nader may be the little guy up against the corporate might of the Democrats. However, as you point out, he has a respected track record. If they get into power, the Democrats will sell out the American public. A vote for Nader is a chance to begin to build a campaign to rid politics of injustice and corruption and a vote for true democracy - where ordinary people can have a voice in the running of the country, rather than politicans who are bought out by corporations. He who pays the piper plays the tune. We need to build an alternative voice for the vast majority of the public who are not millionaires.
