Is the news running dry on real stories?

Is the news running dry on real stories?

I'm sure I'm stating the obvious but whoever is filtering the media wire services is doing a real poor job of find newsworthy stories. Is it that dried up that Britney Spears goes out partying with Paris Hilton is the top story of the day? Plus these sub-stories about her with no underwear on? If not that, then more bloodshed news about Iraq. Then the child abduction of the day. Then throw in the latest drive by shooting. The world is a depressing place, isn't it? I wonder if anyone ever tries to present positive stories about someone who helps their community by helping the elderly or cleans the beaches. Do kids do that any more? It seems like every minority they show is either a thug or a drug addict. Who decided this? They always interview the stupidest person they could find in the area for a comment on a shooting or a robbery.

Isn't it time to say something about this? The news is supposed to informing the public about what's going on and not about getting an Emmy for the most ridiculous sounding story to air.

Isn't it time the public cleans up the news programs as much as our restuarants and public parks?

MTV

I never got into MTV much, only very early on. So I can't speak as to which were good shows or not. Even then I thought that MTV was much too influential, and not in a good way. It took music from something you only listen to, to something you watch as well. It was like opening a "Pandora's Box"... The attention paid to these 'girls' is unwarranted and sick... If people think that this is something to joke about, or make light of, you need to think again. Look at the rash of eating disorders that plague our children, mostly young girls, as they strive to attain and maintain 'the look' of these flaky examples. The more attention THEY get, the more our children want to immulate them. And then the other extreme is obesity...those who know that they will never 'measure up'? Not saying that this is the sole cause of the obesity epidemic..we all know better than that. But how can you inspire a child to care about their weight when they are overwhelmed by images like this shit everywhere they look? Sex sells...and if you don't look like one of these tramps, or if you wear panties now(?), where are you going to fit in? Sick Sad World indeed.... Lady:P http://www.xomba.com/xombyte/LadyPeninhand

NExt time on Sick Sad World...

This all comes down to viewers and readership. You know, what people say they read and then what they really read. It reminds me of the show on Daria: "Next time on Sick Sad World.." Mike judd hit right on the money. WHy did they take that show off the air? Stupid MTV. --Sue

Do you think there will come

Do you think there will come a day when she wakes up and actually feels embarrassed for the stupid things she's doing now? Probably not - she seems to have lost her ability to be embarrassed.

Britney...

Sue's experiment worked. It got people talking. It's sad that it's Britney Spears and not about real problems like homelessness or the economy. Whether Britney Spears is out on the town with or without underwear does not affect anyone in a real manner. Same goes for Lindsey Lohan and her visit to the AA meetings. Why do people care this much about Paris Hilton? She's not that hot. I hope it's not for her mind...now that would be scary!!!!

Thank God!!

Sue...I am so glad to hear you say that!! I wondered if the whole world turned upside down while I wasn't looking! "Sue Stone, writing about Britney too!" You have redeemed yourself somewhat...At least I know that you haven't completely lost your mind!! HA! Lady:P

If that Britney story stays

If that Britney story stays in the popular category too long I may have to openly apologize on a seperate xombyte. --Sue

If a xombyte falls in a forest, does it make any noise?

Sue, I know the feeling. I've written some well researched things here and elsewhere that barely got noticed, then a dash of a reaction to a Britney Spears story in five minutes and it gets more than 200 views. Go figure.

I don't see it

The news I watch/read has the Iraq war as the lead story every day, along with the poisoning of the former KGB agent, etc. I think there's plenty of real news out there that's being covered by the media. Yes, the tabloids and entertainments shows are covering all the celeb stuff, but I wouldn't consider them "news programs," and the wire services I read feature celeb news far down in the news hole, if at all. Unless you're talking about your local TV news, which has always been a mix of cat-in-tree, fires-and-floods, shootings, celebs, etc.

Isn't it interesting...

HA HA HA! I posted the Britney thing as an experiment. I have posted some literary journalism pieces that took 6 to 10 weeks to compile and another week or two to structure. The results? Not many reads or comments. I had posted the Oprah Weight loss thing a while back for my own memory. I have been losing weight for 9 months now and I wanted to be able to go back and reread what Dr. Oz was saying. Sadly, this is my most read story. So as an experiment I posted a Tabloidesque wire article - I mean I didn't even write anything! And well, you see how it is doing over there on the Popular Today chart. I apologize. I will be posting a lengthy piece on African American students getting into University of California schools, the lack o African American students gettinginto these schools and an inner city teacher making a difference. I have been working on this story for over 7 weeks and I hope to get it published. See? I'm not THAT evil. --Sue
