Is the Source of Information More Important than its Correctness?

This is something that I've seen a lot, not just here on Xomba but on other websites where more controversial subjects are discussed. Person A posts an article or renders an opinion about something. Person B disagrees with the points made in the article and posts a number of news links or other information to explain why. Person A doesn't even read the information, then goes on to dismiss them out-of-hand for being biased.

What is wrong with this picture? The basic rule-of-thumb for anything you find on the Internet is it should be corroborated by at least two other independent sources before it is accepted as factual. Those two sources should not be part of the story you are fact-checking nor should they be published by the same company or political group that is the source for the original story, which prevents conflict-of-interest in the information.

If the information can be corroborated, it should be accepted.

The trouble is some people debating contentious subject matter have strong opinions and biases, which leads them to lower the criteria for what information is factual for finding things that support their opinions and, conversely, a raising of the criteria for items that contradict or rebuke their opinions. It is basic human nature.

For a personal example, I have been in many debates in the political arena and, since my goal is to out the truth regardless of party affiliation, I've used sources from what some people would consider "left-leaning" or "progressive" websites. The information is corroborated from other independent sources and is intuitively correct. When I've used that information to support my arguments, it has been dismissed out-of-hand by those whose arguments have been demonstrated to be false.

I am not saying that I am always correct with my information. I would go so far as to say that I am asking to be corrected, if I am wrong. But, by extension, I am making the demand that if I am wrong that I be shown with counter-information and corroborated evidence WHY I am wrong. Just claiming that I am wrong because I have a different political view is unacceptable. Furthermore, using blanket ad hominems to attack me when I continue to ask for that corroborated evidence is evidence that what I am asking for doesn't exist.

We're all adults here, so the schoolyard name-calling should have been outgrown years ago. The greatest gift freedom gives us is the freedom to think for ourselves. We should honor that gift by having intelligent, respectful exchanges of information.

@jdubhub--True That

You're right; I was thinking of some Sunday School book's definition of "Amen" in my 'ancient' memory (millions-and-millions of ... micro-seconds ago lol). ---Uncle MythMan, who KNOWS you're as awesome as Maria Bello (in your special way), yet needs to hear *your* comments! Join Here!SarahPalin

@angelskates--"Magical"?

*I* know you mean, 'Have an only-achievable-by-highly-complex-reasoning day,' but others don't trust angels' good-intentions. ---Uncle MythMan, who KNOWS you're as awesome as Maria Bello (in your special way), yet needs to hear *your* comments! Join Here!SarahPalin

Amen means "So be it" as an interjection

According to dictionary.com, anyway, for its use at the end of prayers. In noun form, your definition is close. The most current form of "amen" is "true that". DO YOU HAVE THE WRITE STUFF?

Amen, jdubhub ... "Amen?" Hmmmmmmmm ...

(with #comment-35341) An example: that word, 'Amen.' It is written that the meaning of the word is "I believe," but here (and most-often elsewhere) it really means 'I agree.' That probably evolved through "I believe You Agree (God)" to "I believe`E (God) agrees, and so I agree" into "I'm with God on this one too" etc., but that's up to the readers' minds (NOT some scribbling on old paper!) ... but Uncle MythMan still KNOWS you're more awesome than NFL Cheerleaders, yet needs to hear *your* comments on http://is.gd/2s8V http://is.gd/22wY http://is.gd/1fSs http://is.gd/1fRg http://is.gd/1fSe & http://is.gd/1fSj -- Click His Stamp to Discover!

Thanks for the comment, Wdzzz!

I am not a fan of stopping unnecessarily when it comes to education or self-enlightenment. It is the paradox of "the more I know the more I realize I don't know", which drives me because I don't like not knowing. You know? LOL Actually, my mantra is cooperate and coexist. My wife and I were talking this past weekend about how much HUGELY better all of our lives and the world would be if everyone on earth were on their correct paths. Can you imagine? Think about that for a second. Many of the things that make empathic people physically ill would be gone. People would actually work together in their families, jobs, and neighborhoods. Politicians wouldn't have to lie because there would be no need for national or global governance, people would be able to peaceably coexist because we would respect the journey and lessons that we are all here to learn. My hope is my goal. DO YOU HAVE THE WRITE STUFF?

jdubhub.....keep searching for our own truths...

I agree. Excellent statement. Thanks for the article.

The Bible says a lot of things, but it doesn't say everything

The trouble with some using the Bible as proof of whatever is that, while the Bible says a lot of things, it doesn't say everything. That "everything" is important because it is proof positive that we still need to engage our brains and do a little critical thinking for ourselves. Nowhere is this more important than finding more information to support our beliefs that do not lie within the pages of Holy Writ. If the Bible were the end-all-be-all of Human Knowledge, then God would not have given us minds to think, eyes to see, and ears to hear. We would be unintelligent beasts with our cerebral hard drives installed with Bible 2.0 and that would be the end of it. Anything that didn't fit within the programming would either cause our brains to crash--a literal "blue screen of death"--or we just wouldn't have the ability to recognize that anything else existed. The fact that there is so much out there that the writers of the books of the Bible could never hope to understand is reason enough for me and others to keep searching for our own truths. We all came down here to fulfill certain goals in this lifetime, so that is where I am going to focus time and energy. That is neither good nor bad, it just is, like God just is. I am amazed and I believe other people who are at least a little self-actualized would be amazed at how much we "believe" to be true is based on seriously faulty premises. Once we've ended this life and returned to the Other Side, we will be able to see how little we do know. DO YOU HAVE THE WRITE STUFF?

Good-Witch/Bad-Witch? Ad Hominem

Part of 'naming sources' is for the good 'Ad Hominem' (like when I use a Bible-reference and link to where I went to look it up, and there's an immediate, almost-subliminal, 'since the Bible's true, there's truth to this thought'). But disbelieving the obvious truth because of the source is (though I hate to admit it) another part of the gift freedom gives us---the freedom to be stupid! I'll admit it right here; I am fairly stupid. Chances are, I write plenty of stupid stuff all the timeses. And yes; having written that, there's now a little more 'subliminal Ad-Hominem that I'm stupid' floating around out there. I'm not afraid to own one of those "I'm with Stupid (⇑)"-tees! And wearing it too often--I'm sure--will tear my brain a new one. And naming sources is (at the same time as it's very-very non-stupid) YOUR expression of freedom-to-be-stupid!lol---you can rely on other sources to be smart, while you can also rely on them to be possibly-stupid! The true stupidity lies in thinking you already know what they say BEFORE you see it! ... but Uncle MythMan still KNOWS you're more awesome than NFL Cheerleaders, yet needs to hear *your* comments on http://is.gd/2s8V http://is.gd/22wY http://is.gd/1fSs http://is.gd/1fRg http://is.gd/1fSe & http://is.gd/1fSj -- Click His Stamp to Discover!
