It could have been me
posted August 12, 2009 - 11:09amSo I've been researching human trafficking today. Very happy topic...not really.
I was mortified to hear that not even the Russian police help these poor people and the way children are exploited.
When people write about poverty and human rights there is so much focus on Africa and Asia (which needs attention don't get me wrong) I just feel a dedication the the land where I was born. I was born in the former Soviet Union and I feel it is so important to get the word out about the human rights violations, the poverty, and the atrocities that are going on there. I am a lowly college student this is the only way I have to help my people and I will not give up.
Around 1 million of my people are working illegally across Russia and western Europe. Around 20% of them are performing forced labor. I think it is so sad.
I read an article about girls Katya and Lena who were promised a program to study abroad, they were then beaten, raped, and forced to work in a strip club in Detroit. it was so sad, I could easily be Katya or Lena.
I guess even though my writing does not get the most hits, I feel a strong connection to what I write.
