It's Time to Limit Embryo Implantation in the United States-14 and Counting

It's time for the federal goverment to step in. A single woman who lives with her parents, and her other 6 children, ages 7,6, 5,3 and 2 twins age 2, just gave birth in California to 8 Octopulets, due to the implantation of 8 embryos. Now I can see why this woman wouldn't want to kill children already growning in the womb, and would want to implant all the embryos already developed. Who would want to think that their children would be experiemented on for stem cell research, or adopted out as embryos, or destroyed because of genetic defects, or even frozen into eternity? But there is a solution in Italy, and Germany it is illegal to implant more than 3 embryos at any one time, and all 3 must be implanted in the mother no matter what the gender or the health of the embryo. This is mandated by law. The Italians, and the Germans have none of the hangups of our society in so called personal choice of the government limiting family size in regards to fertility treatments. Three that's it. The rights of the Italian children are also respected since the moment of conception; they are allowed to grow and develop in the mother's womb. For those of you who keep saying this is between the doctor, and the woman, let's hear what one doctor had to say, Dr. James Grifo, professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the NYU School of Medicine, said: "I don't think it's our job to tell them(the mother) how many babies they're allowed to have. I am not a policeman for reproduction in the United States. My role is to educate patients." National guidelines suggest that doctors limit the number of embryos implanted to avoid multiple births. Notice these are guidelines; nothing to suggest that doctors will be punished for ignoring these guidelines. No force of law here like in Italy, and Germany. No lawsuits for medical malpractice. The woman claims she had no idea that 8 could develop. Sounds like no doctor really told her that. Oh well, do they get paid by the embryo I wonder? Or do they just think every one will want to abort "the extras." The parents don't take responsibility, the doctors don't, and the government opts out, so who is left to see that a single mother doesn't raise 14 children on fertility treatments alone. Does she get by with government subsidies perhaps? I don't know? Obviously she could afford the fertility treatments. There is a mental condition where some women always have to be pregnant. I believe it is called the Nesting Syndrome. No one evaluated this woman, and that no one included her doctor, for a mental problem called Nesting Syndrome. What anyone can afford to do they do in our American society, from plastic surgery to fertility treatments. Let's bring back common sense to our society. Octomom

While I'm not in agreement with Octomom's choices, she has the right to make them.

HOWEVER, if she is going to make them she has no right to be a burden on the rest of us.

If she can afford the fertility treatment she should be able to afford caring for her kids.

If not, then she really needs to get a hold of herself.

Update on Update, Mother Lies

Well, now it seems that the previous reports weren't true. According to the grandmother, there weren't 8 embroyos left over from previous implantations. The mother went to her old fertility treatment clinic and they refused to do it, because the mother was on disablity payments for a back injury, and she shopped around until she found an unethical doctor to implant 8. And according to the grandmother she is suffering from Nesting Syndrome and psychological problems, and without public assistance can't care for her previous 6 children conceived through artificial means. Nothing will happen to the doctor accept maybe being dropped from professional organizations. It really is time to draw the line. I believe a psychological assessment, financial means test, and limiting 3 embroyos by law should be instituted for this procedure.

Update on Article

Update on my essay above. New accounts do say that the single lady was made to choose of getting 8 embroys implanted or destroying by thawing all the eggs. This is like putting a gun to her head. She wanted to give all 8 a chance at life. Also, reports say she does seem to be suffering from Nesting Syndrome. This brings me to my point. It was unethical for a doctor to implant all 8 fertilized eggs all at once, putting the children, and mother at risk. They could have done 4 at a time, and 2 years later, the other 4, or try to adopt the embroyos out. But better yet there should be a legal moratorim of 3 embroyos produced, and 3 implanted at one time, with no option for freezing. Nobody can seem to locate which fertility clinci she used, no doctor will admit to doing this; either, which is fishy.
