It's Not My Fault--Money

It's not my fault. That's what we all say.

Too much debt? It's not my fault the bank made a sub-prime loan to me based on my credit rating. It's not my fault that the credit card company issued a card to me with my 560 FICO. It's not my fault because they knew I only brought home $2000/month. It's not my fault that I signed all the paperwork knowing what would happen when I couldn't pay back all the money I was borrowing.

Actually it is. No one made you sign that mortgage with the adjustable rate. Or mail in the credit card application. Or sign the car note for the brand new car when an older model would have worked. Yes, it's true that an institution used predatory policies against you with your knowledge and consent. That's why your credit is taking a hit now. That's why your home is one missed payment from foreclosure. That's why you park your car in the neighbor's garage so the repo man won't find it.

I'm not saying I approve of predatory lending policies because I definately do not. I think it's disgusting how these places target the very people who are struggling to make things right, clean up their past and prove their future. I think it's disgusting how credit card companies whore themselves out on college campuses, promising a t-shirt or pizza in order to get an unemployed student to apply for a pre-approved card. I abhore title loan companies and payday loan companies, many of whom are owned by the very banks who would laugh at you if you applied for any sort of credit through their pristine institutions.

HOWEVER...the bottom line is you are still the one in control of your actions. You agreed to the terms. It is your job to pay it back. If you can negotiate a lower rate of interest or payment I say go for it. If you can get them to reduce the total for a one time payment then do it. But you still need to pay it.

Yeah, it's almost criminal

Yeah, it's almost criminal the way credit card companies pretty much ruin lives. There should be harsher restrictions against these companies who often jack interest rates up to %22 or more. But I'm sure they have a powerful lobby, and there's billions of dollars of profits at stake. But look how long the mortgage crisis had to go on for before Bush's admin started to try to do anything. It's business as usual, which means business wins. It's sad though. My advice to anyone out there who wants to listen: cut your credit card up, you don't need it. Personal Accountability has Become Un-American

The days of people owning their mistakes and taking personal responsibility for their actions seem to be over. If we smoke, we can blame the tobacco companies. If we are overweight, we can blame fast food restaurants. If we are in debt, we can blame shady finance and credit card companies. If we are unhappy, we can pop a pill and ignore the reasons that we are unhappy. If our kids are not model citizens, we can blame the school system and the government. If we don't get our way all the time, we can blame *insert racial or political group here*. The only one who can make us do anything is us and the only time anything worthwhile can be done is right now. Author Louise Hay wrote, "The point of power is always in the present moment." I strive to live my life around that principle because ultimately I am in charge of my life. Click here if you have something to say and want to get paid to say it!

You Are So Right

You are so right. We all have to be responsible for our actions. So many people seem so obsessed with assigning blame for things. We all make mistakes. The important part is not who to blame for the mistake. The important part is fixing the mistake and learning from it. Success actually teaches us very little. It is the mistakes that happen along the way that teach us how to work for success. Angel
