Jane Austen, Zombies, and Davy Jones' Locker

Jane Austen, Zombies, and Davy Jones' Locker

When most people think of Jane Austen they are reminded of her classic, often satiric collection of stories of young women, love, society and life. These timeless stories have been on the must read list for women of all ages throughout the last hundred or so years. A few of them have even been made into adaptations for the silver screen. But times they are a changing and the some people want more to experience more than a traditional tale of plight and predicament. Now they want zombies.

Quirk Books, the publisher of the famous Worst Case Scenario series, is now the publisher of the next big book phenomena. It is a book with an entirely new twist on the classic tale of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen that is sure to entertain an entirely new audience. This sci-fiesque adaptation will include the addition of brain hungry zombies, entitled Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by a Los Angeles television screen writer Seth Grahame-Smith. While the hazardous undead ancestors of England are roaming the beautiful countryside, women must consider the many pros and cons of musket wielding. Also, the book cover is adorn with a skull bearing, blood spattered, zombifed portrait of Miss Austen.

If you love the idea of zombie filled Regency England that you'll be excited to know there is more to come in the genre of classic literature meets science fiction/horror parody. Mr. Grahame-Smith is also expected to release another highly monsterized version of the Austen classic Sense and Sensibility called Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters, expected to be released sometime in September 2009.

While some may be offended by the parodied works I think it is a fun new way to appreciate classic literature. People who have never heard of, or read Austen classics will now be inclined to give them a try. It may even be helpful the next time I can't decide whether to pick up a book like Jane Eyre or The Odyssey.

Thanks!

I just wanted to take a minute and thank my fellow Xombies for the great feedback on my first feature post. I really appreciate the input! So....thanks.

Is Jane Austen out of copyright?

I wonder if Seth Grahame-Smith is reproducing almost the entire original manuscript but adding another strand or two?  I suppose it might attract a few new readers but the original books are appreciated by most young people - if they're introduced properly.  Pride and Prejudice read aloud keeps them quiet and attentive and they seem to enjoy listening...  Great image and very appropriate for a front page feature on Xomba +1

Looked Good

I really love the idea.  I have to be honest: I hated reading Jane Austin for grad school then listening for hours on end as it was drilled into my head how she was the greatest author ever and all her books are perfect.  But Jane Austin with Zombies...I have to admit after seeing this in book stores I am very intrigued.

Pride,Pejudice and Zombies

Sounds like a fun read. Just don't read it in lieu of the original for your English Lit class. That could be disastrous.

The New Fad

I wish this book was around in highschool.  I probably would have read it.  I still get the cold sweats thinking about the idea of read Pride and Prejudice now.  Even if it has zombies in it.

Nice article!
