Job Application and Drug Testing
posted September 30, 2007 - 8:23amAs filling out a job application, some companies require drug testing.
It is not enough anymore to provide them with all kinds of personal information. Now they also want you to urinate in a cup. To a certain extent I understand the need for all of this personal information,
but having an actual biological sample from applicants seems to go a little bit beyond necessity.
Employers expect workers not to be high or drunk, but they should not require employees to prove their innocence by taking a drug test.
I understand that large corporations need to protect themselves but I feel that it is a bit of an intrusion to ask someone to urinate in a cup. Although going through a drug screen is a common occurrence for many employees, I have to wonder if it is really necessary and if it really protects the employer from drug users. Most drug screens will only show substances that are currently in the applicant’s system and many of the most serious illegal substances can be purged from the system within 24 hours and this fact makes me think that the process of drug screening cannot possibly be as effective as employers would hope it to be.
The lab test is an other invasion of privacy, reveals not only the presence of illegal drugs, but the existence of other physical and medical conditions, such as genetic predisposition to disease or pregnancy.
Unfortunately for employers, there is a wide variety of readily available supplements and systems out there for people who wish to clean any unwanted substances from their bodies. In this way, a drug screen can be thwarted because a drug user can slip through the screening process only to continue their usage once they have been given the job. These supplements and cleansing systems are widely available at many sports stores and other health stores and can be 100% effective in fooling a drug screen. Not that I know that from personal experience, of course.
Human error in the lab, or the test’s failure to distinguish between legal and illegal substances, can make even a small margin of error add up to a huge potential for false positive results.
I do know that if you have to take a drug screen and you feel as though you are not prepared, there are many quite, easy, and cheap ways that may help. If they are it is a GNC store in your town you are in luck. They commonly carry several different products that can cleanse your system within a couple of hours. Because most drug screens require that you take the test within 24 hours of being notified, these products begin to work in as little as one hour and will be effective for several hours so that you can take the test and still feel protected. Just remember that you still have some rights even when you feel as though they are being infringed upon.
Sometimes drug tests fail to distinguish between legal and illegal substances. Even the poppy seeds found in baked goods can produce a positive result for heroin. Tests don’t prevent accidents, but good management and counseling can.
