Joe Torre Out as Yankees' Manager; Turns Down Team's Contract Offer

The New York Yankees are looking for a new manager for the first time in a dozen years, but they didn't fire Joe Torre.

Instead, Torre turned down their contract offer, which was for $5 million for a one-year deal. Under that contract he still would have been the highest-paid manager in baseball, and could have made up to $8 million with bonuses.

But many followers felt that the deal was insulting to Torre, and that the Yankees offered Torre a deal they knew he would turn down, saving them the criticism for firing him.

Torre's tenure was filled with many highs and lows, which included winning the World Series in 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2000.
