- John Constantine
Woah, I know kung fu. I wish I could say something classy and inspirational, but that just wouldn't be our style. Harry, there's enough C-4 on this thing to put a hole in the world! Excellent! Ah yes the ever inspiring words of the master of Kung Fu himself, Keanu Reeves. In this film, mr Reeves is playing a character based on the comic book "Hellblazer". That character in question is the enigmatic John Constantine. Constantine also stars Rachel Weisz as Angela and Isabel Dodson. We also have a very young Shia LaBeouf acting as the protege to Constantine Chaz Kramer. In some of the lesser roles we have Djimon Hounsou as Midnight, Max Baker as Beeman, Gavin Rossdale as Balthazar and Peter Stormare as your friend and mine, Mr Lucifer.
This is a super natural thriller action movie with religious undertones. Through this tale we learn that starting at an early age, John Constantine was blessed or maybe cursed, with the ability to see the Angels and Demons who join us in our walk on this planet. John has taken it upon himself to send the demons who are not co-operating back down to the depths of hell. Now this sounds very noble but is far from it. See long ago, John could not take life anymore and tried to kill himself. This is a mortal sin. This means that Constantine is going to hell when he dies. To make matters worse, well I will let John explain this as he says it best. "What would *you* do if you were sentenced to a prison where half the inmates were put there by you?" That’s a pretty compelling reason to try to find a way out. So Constantine has burdened himself to do God's work in hopes that one day he would be forgiven and that he would be able to skip hell and transcend to Heaven. The Devil is of course hoping for Constantine to fail and join him in the depths.
To make matters worse, we find out that our hero has cancer and is dying. This of course does not dissuade Mr Constantine from drinking and smoking constantly. This does, however, mean that John is now living on borrowed time as he is slated to go sooner rather than later. The story goes as this, there is a "Spear of Destiny" which grants whoever holds it supernatural powers. This is not a good thing. We also find out that the demons are basically cheating and influencing people to teeter towards a life of evil. This is of course not allowed. What this equates to is a lot of Demon fighting, some betrayal, a little mystery and a can of sarcasm.
Through the journey, Constantine is forced to fight his way out of several situations of demonic battles. We get to see all kinds of magical weapons as well as creepy looking demons. This all culminates with the revelation that the son of the Devil is trying to be born, and this can not be allowed.
This movie is a decent enough action movie with a linear plot. There are not too many twists and turns and plays more like a action thriller horror. That being said, this movie is enjoyable, the special effects are pretty good and Keeanu Reeves plays his role well. With enough plot to get the viewer through the slow times and with good enough action in the fight scenes, this movie is at least worth a watch, if for nothing else to see Peter Stormare act as the Devil.
