John Wilkes: The Scandalous Father of Civil Liberty by Arthur H Cash | Book Review

If you enjoy reading biographies, have a interest in the political history and/or scandals of Britain you’ll appreciate John Wilkes: The Scandalous Father of Civil Liberty by Arthur H Cash (published 2006).

Anyone who has studied the development of British Parliament and Democracy will have met this man in books and papers on the subjects.  John Wilkes was the MP for Middlesex in 1771, when he won a legal battle which put an end to the suppression of parliamentary reports.   Without Wilkes there would be no Hansard and, at least, less democracy in Britain than there is.

The link below is to an excellent and balanced review of the Cash’s book by a member of the Department of History at the University of Stirling.  It will entice you to read the book but it also points out several important inaccuracies.
