Jose Ramos-Horta President of East Timor Has Been Shot
posted February 11, 2008 - 2:50amFears of unrest and more violence plague the nation of East Timor after the president Jose Ramos-Horta was shot by rebel soldiers during an attack on his home in Dili. He was shot in the stomach. The attack took place in the early morning before dawn.
The leader of the rebel soldiers was killed during the attack. Two cars were used in the attack. They drove past the house of the president and began shooting.
There was also an attack on the Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao, but he was unhurt.
The rebel solder, Alfredo Reinado, who was killed, had been involved in previous incidents and was put in jail on a charge of murder. He managed to escape from prison and he and his group had been hiding in the mountains and resisting calls from the authorities to surrender.
Ramos-Horta is said to be in a serious but stable condition. He is being taken to Darwin, Australia for further medical treatment.
