Just Call Me Captain Morgan!

Just Call Me Captain Morgan!

To paraphrase Lucy Lawless (famous for her portrayal of Xena the Warrior Princess), Chicks who kick butt rock!

In my experience, perhaps yours is different, really strong female characters are hard to come by. There just doesn't seem to be as much variety of kick-butt heroines, as there are male heroes. But, I was determined to find one!

You may be wondering why I would wish to be a pirate. They break the law of the land, they're cheaters! To quote "Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl" - "You cheated!", "Pirate!"

Yes, yes, all that's true. But, they are also independent. They fight skillfully. They rule the high seas. They're strong and rebellious and don't take lip from anyone ever! Well, I've never met a real life pirate of the high seas, but hey, in our fictionalized romanticism of them, all those qualities are pretty standard.

And, certainly, the character of Morgan Adams embodied all these (what I would consider positive, at least to a degree) attributes. She was witty and clever, even while being illiterate. She was independent and strong, even while needing her crew to accomplish her mission. She could command a ship and lead an army, even in the face of adversity and mutiny. She could escape even the most dire of circumstances and survive a storm in a rocky cove, even with a bullet in her hip.

Like the real life female pirates of old, Morgan Adams faced a male dominated area of life head on, becoming ever stronger in the knowledge of the obstacles in her way to achieving her goals, and never complaining about them. She saw a situation for what it was, and she handled it quickly with cunning, skill, strength, and whatever she had around her.

Rarely have I seen a female character that was so intelligent, and yet so skilled in the arts of fighting, sailing, and piracy. Elizabeth Swan, eventually, came really close in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series. But, even she wouldn't have won the day against Morgan Adams.
