Kawasaki Disease
posted January 3, 2009 - 12:21amI came across a disease I had never heard of before, on the Internet. When I read what it was I read the age it mostly struck, I was stunned and saddened. I wish these children and their families the best. This disease, called Kawasaki Disease rarely strikes anybody over five years old or over eight. The most common ones infected are boys of Asian ancestry. Although it can hit others, and the disease itself is not fatal.
The symptoms are fever, rash, swollen hands and feet, irritation and redness of the whites of the eyes, swollen lymph glands in the neck, irritation and inflamation of the mouth, lips, and the throat.
The cause of Kawasaki is not known. It doesn't seem to be contagious or hereditary. It's believed to be caused by a virus. However, children who have it have about a 15% to 25%
chance of heart damage or heart changes.
These damages or changes can be damage of the coronary arteries of the heart muscle itself, or part of the coronary wall can be weakened and bloat out in an aneurysm, a blood clot can form in the weakened area and a heart attack can occur, or an aneurysm can burst. Yet amazingly, the heart problems usually go away in five or six weeks.
Since the cause is unknown asprin is still the best medicine
given to patients. It helps with the rash, fever, and pain.
