Keith Richards Is Immortal
Keith Richards Is Immortal
I was watching a trailer for that new Rolling Stones film, Shine a Light, on YouTube the other day. I'm not sure whether I'll fork over the bucks to see this flick or not, but that's not the point of this piece.
Keith Richards scares me a little more each time I see his face after a few years have passed. It's just not the same face of 10, 20, or 30s years ago. Don't get me wrong, we all get lines, sags, and bags. But his face has undergone an incredible metamorphosis that just isn't normal. Mick looks old, too, but he still has basically the same features he always had. I saw a clip of Keith from that Johnny Depp Pirate film of last year. There was no need to embellish his face, I don't think. It's frightening enough as it is.
Keith hasn't been kind to himself, that's for sure. It's amazing this guy is still kicking after a lifetime of chain smoking, heavy drinking, and ingesting enough illegal drugs to kill off a decent sized metropolis. He falls out of palm trees, he snorts his late father's ashes, and keep on rocking. I've come to the conclusion that this man is immortal.
I like Keith, I really do. He's infinitely charming when he speaks, although rarely coherent. Mick I can't take anymore, though. His worn out strutting is just a bit ridiculous. But Keith still seems musically relevant -- he's the consummate "bluesman" guitarist. He can get on stage and play with anyone and it works. I caught another video on YouTube (I spend way too damn much time there) of Nora Jones singing with our beloved immortal -- Love Hurts I think it was. Great performance! I think Keith was getting seriously turned on as he draped his arm around her and they belted out the words together. Well, of course. It's Nora Jones! Yummy!
Time will tell if my theory is correct. But I have a feeling Keith will still be laying out those hot licks long after I'm dead.

Ron Wood is the one scares me - he's always looked like crap. And he swooped in like vulture after the other guy died. Scary!
Despite his looks Keith is only about 40 yrs old - he started playing with the Stones at age 10. A true prodigy! But his looks have degraded from continued viewing of monkey porn given to him by Mick (by the way that is where Mick gets his onstage "moves" so he can trully say he views it only for research). Mick has long since let go of the "MP" as he calls it but Charlie Watts was quick to pick up the ball. Charlie, never one to miss a business opportunity, has his own monkey porn production company called Go Bananas Films. He sells to Keith wholesale and even lets him come down to view a few live takes every now and then. Yes, Charlie is Keith's monkey porn pusher.
So, Keith is not immortal, only a strung out "MP" viewer!
None of this is true of course!

Wait, I don't think Ron replaced the dead guy. I think he replaced the guy who originally replaced the dead guy. Mick Taylor was the guy who replaced the dead guy, I think. : )

I'm pretty scattered when I first get up in the morning. I prop myself up in my chair in front of my computer and scroll shakingly through the list of buddy posts to find the one that will begin my day.
One, no, two, maybe, three, no, four, no, five, no, six, Keith Richards? Well, Keith Richards? Keith Richards?
Six, Keith Richards, no, seven, maybe, six, Keith Richards??
You, know...why not? Well, he did fall out of a tree. Maybe he fell out of a plane this time, bruised, but, ok?
Keith always looks like yesterday's gone, (and, today's gone too) but, still has the power to continue. Like the Eveready Rabbit, Keith, just, keeps going and going! It would be fun to see Keith and the Eveready Rabbit do a duet.
None, the less, I look at Keith, and I look at me, and I think; "it certainly turned out to be the best of ideas when I took all the mirrors out of my house when I turned 50."
You'd think a mirror would last forever, but, I have found out they just don't give you the image you're looking for any more after 50, at, least not for me. I bet Keith doesn't rely on mirrors much either, anymore.
So, I decided to start my day out with this read about Keith Richards. If Keith can keep on keeping on, well, I have no excuse, and will follow this dude into another day.

I imagine if Keith has mirrors in his abode, it would further lend credence to my theory. Looking at that image everyday would scare the life out of even the heartiest of mortals.
Thanks for starting your day with my post. It shows you have excellent taste. : )
One thing i'm not getting with age, and that's less egotistical.

(and, if you are 50 or more, well, Keith and I need to come see you.)
I was told a long time ago, by my Grandmother, that when you hit 50, things just seem easier, or, have a good feel.
She, was in her late 80s, and I was in my mid 20s. I had no idea what she was talking about.
This year will mark my 57th revolution around the sun (Gosh, who would have ever thought?), and, ya, know, she was right. Let's see if I can explain this a little bit:
For, me, and from the multitudes I spoke with over the first 49 years, 364 days, life was an uphill ride, battle, flight, whatever, term you care to use, but, it was definitely up, and sweaty.
When I actually hit 50, I didn't think much about what she had said. My big concern was what to do with those damn mirrors. I gave them to my neighbors. (By 40, I had learned to shave in the shower without a mirror.)
(and, I always needed a mirror to trim my mustache. But, when I student-taught kindergarten, my students told me I looked better without it, so, it's gone, which brings me to make note here regarding the picture posted on Xomba. It's eight years old -- I look like hell now -- I need to get a current one posted -- I'll work on that. can you post more than one picture? That way you all can compare--pretty scary...)
But, as, I approach the 57th Revolution Mark, I, gotta, tell ya, the 50s are a breath of fresh air! The up and the sweat seems to vanish. I have become very comfortable with who I am, finally, in my 50s (Boy, I was worried about that for a long, long, time.)(and, because of my discomfort, I'd thought I'd end up a recluse, but, thankfully, it did not happen.)
All my personal-negatives have disappeared.
Egotistical? Maybe? I have to give a lot of credit to Portland State University, and Portland Community College for widening my spectrum-perception, for giving me the tools to include all the world around me, realizing who "the other" is, meaning other people, as I walk through life.
Egotistical? I'm sure I'd be more self-centered now, and probably a completely different person, certainly, more egotistical, had it not been for what I learned from those educational institutions.
I didn't do the college-trip until I turned 48. I was worried I'd have no skills in the new century, so I joined the school system for nine years -- actually I still have membership ---- the 10-yr B.A.!
Instead of looking in, which I think might be egotistical, I look out, and, every day, aim to add to the building of this century, and try to help create the future world, one that will work for everybody.
Do you think its still egotistical? I don't really know??
What was the question, again? :-)

I still have 4 years to go (I'll be 46 in August) before I hit the big 5-0. I hope I'm as comfortable with myself as you seem to be -- and have acquired as much wisdom.
No, you're definitely not "egotistical" as far as I can tell. You're a pretty well grounded individual, it seems.
