Kelp's Class...Dig It, Chicky-Baby!

"You might as well like yourself. Just think of all the time you gotta spend wit' you. If you don't think much of yourself, what do you expect others to think of you?"

Jerry Lewis
as
Professor Julius Kelp, The Nutty Professor (1963)
Nutty Professor Special Collectors Edition DVD< a>

Well, that pretty much sums it up! During Jerry Lewis' monologue near the end of this Jekyll and Hyde comedy classic, as Buddy Love "devolves" (or more accurately "evolves") back into the nerdy, but lovable Professor Julius Kelp for the last time, these few lines succinctly sum up the lesson in this movie. Yes, besides being tremendously entertaining, an American classic, and arguably one of the best films of Mr. Lewis' career, this zany comedy had a message.

It's too bad though, that in real life it doesn't always work out that someone like Julius actually "gets the girl" or whatever their goal is. I have seen plenty of good people that DO like themselves and ARE liked by others, yet continue to struggle just to get ahead, while some, (who are pretty worthless human beings), coast along through life. At least I know that the good ones are in better company when they're spendin' time wit' themselves!

Actually, I believe that most people aren't one extreme or the other. We all have a little bit of Buddy Love AND a little bit of Julius Kelp within us somewhere. (I know I do) Maybe that's why the movie and the characters are so well loved!

You gotta dig Kelp's class, chicky-baby!

I want to be anyone other than myself..I just can relate to the character..who was actually both. Buddy is what came out when he wasn't happy being himself. huh? hmm...I hope that didn't sound too much like Mythman..lol

So which is it?

Are you saying you want to be Julius? Or Buddy? Or both?
