Labor Day Parade in Brooklyn: West Indian Celebration

It’s time to enjoy all the flavor and thrills as millions of people in Brooklyn, New York gather on September 7, 2009 along Eastern Parkway for the event of the year: The West Indian American Day parade. Don’t be late for the 11 am parade commencement!

In 2009, the West Indian American Day Parade & Carnival explores its 42nd anniversary. If you love expansive and entertaining festivals, don’t miss this amazing cultural experience. Of course, this celebration is not just a one-day event. The whole weekend is committed to festivities and engaging events for the whole family. Some of the activities include: live music, arts & crafts, and cultural activities. The West Indian American Day Carnival is one of the most fabulous and stunningly beautiful parades that New York has to offer.

The Parade

Tons of floats, decorative costumes, thrilling musicians, and exotic food vendors litter the streets during the West Indian American Day Parade. The calypso music combined with dramatic Caribbean flair makes this cultural celebration one of the best events of the season. Unsurprisingly, there are several days of exciting activities that lead up to the big parade. For the best view of the parade, take the subway to the Franklin Avenue stop and go east for several blocks. As you walk back toward the Grand Army Plaza, you will find some excellent viewing areas that will provide you with the perfect opportunity to enjoy the parade. The parade begins at 11 am on September 7th, so come early to experience all the sights and sounds.

The Food

Unbelievably, more than 2 million make their way to this vibrant festival every year. The West Indian American Day Parade and Carnival draws in people from all over the world. The food options available during the course of the weekend are endless! You can enjoy everything from red beans and rice to codfish cakes. Of course, the kids will love all of the macaroni options, and for the sweet tooth, pies and specialty cakes can be found on almost every block. Due to safety reasons, no alcohol is sold or permitted during the events, but plenty of drink options are available.

The Events

If you love the sounds of calypso music, then don’t miss the tremendous talent that will be performing during the weekend events. All of the concerts are held at the Brooklyn Museum at 900 Washington Avenue.   The list of concerts includes: Clash of the Calypso Titans (September 3rd 7:30pm), Stay in School Cultural Concert (September 4th 1:00pm), Brass Fest (September 4th 8:00pm), Junior Carnival (September 5th 9:00am), Panorama Competition (September 5th 8:00pm), and Dimanche Gras (September 6th 7:00pm). No cameras or recording equipment is allowed at the museum shows.
