Landis Says Anti-Doping Lawyer Asked Him to Implicate Lance Armstrong
posted May 10, 2007 - 10:49pmThe situation surrounding doping allegations and Floyd Landis got more interesting Thursday, the day before a hearing on doping, when Landis made some serious allegations against the anti-doping authorities who are prosecuting him.
Landis held a news conference in which he said U.S. Anti-Doping Agency general counsel Travis Tygart offered to reduce his potential suspension in exchange for providing incriminating information about American racing legend and multiple Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong, "or anyone more important than me," according to Landis.
Landis said that Tygart made the offer to the cyclist's lawyer shortly after Landis' positive test for testosterone was confirmed last August.
Armstrong was critical of the USADA after Landis' revelations. "This says a lot about USADA's methods, their tactics and their confidence in their case. [Floyd] has a scientific case to fight, but it's also a case of ethics and morals. This makes USADA look petty," he was reported as saying.
Landis could face a two-year suspension and forfeiture of last year's Tour de France title if his positive test is upheld.
