LASER Hair Removal
posted May 19, 2008 - 7:38amHair Removal has possibly been the most desired and the most painful beauty treatment for women. Hair on the body can be classified as two types: Terminal and Vellus. The terminal hair are found on the underarms, back, legs,arms and the pubic regions. Most other hair on the rest of the body are the vellus hair and are short and unpigmented. It is the terminal pigmented hair that is targeted in a laser hair removal.
Laser hair removal is relatively painless and long lasting. Some users have also indicated permanant hair loss. Lasers remove hair by the process of selective photothermolysis. The light energy from the laser is transferred to thermal energy in the hair follicle. When the thermal energy, or heat, is absorbed by the melanin in the cell structures they are destroyed. The cooling mechanism of the laser ensures the surrounding cells are not damaged.
The laser hair removal can be used to treat any area on the body other than that very close to the eye. The procedure is safe if performed properly. However long term data on the safety has not yet been collated. Moreover it is the most effective on dark hair on a light skin and not so effective on red, grey or blonde hair. Moreover it is expensive compared to other types of hair removal.
Currently FDA has approved four types of lasers to be used for laser hair removal. These are the There are currently four types of lasers used for hair removal: Alexandrite, Ruby, Diode, and ND and LP ND Yag.
The laser hair removal is not a one time activity. Normally it takes between 4-5 sessions separated by 4-6 weeks, for results to show in the treated area. There are no major side effects of laser hair removal and mostly only a temporary rash is left which also goes away in a short time. Very few cases have reported a permanant discoloring of the region treated.
The laser hair removal can be expensive and costs are charged by any of the following methods, it can be a flat fee for a region, a time based i.e. hourly fee, or a pulse based fee. One needs to clarify the costs before opting for laser hair removal treatment.
