Lawn-Mower Injuries: Protect Your Children!

Now, that spring is upon us, in most areas, weeds and grass are growing at very rapid rates. And, many of us will be hearing from our kids “can I mow the lawn?”

I was just reading some information issued by John Hopkins University about the dangers of lawnmowers and children. They bring up the seriousness of what can and, sadly, does happen to children around mowers. No one wishes injury upon anyone from a mower, but, they do occur, and most are serious, and devastating.

Research has shown there are 9,400 lawnmower accidents between U.S. Children and lawnmowers each year. And, John Hopkins states that these injuries are more severe than with any other power tool, losses of fingers, hands, toes, feet, and legs. Many children require amputation, plastic surgery, and fitting of prosthetic devices, as the results of power mower injuries.

Here are some good SAFETY RULES, to protect children:

Children under 6 years old should be kept inside.

Don't let Children under 12 years old to use a walk-behind mower.

Keep Children under 16 years old off ride-on mowers – even with parent.

Never give rides on a mower

If you see a child running in the direction of your mower – TURN IT OFF right-away. (It's easy to slip on freshly cut grass and a child could slide into the mower.

Wear protective goggles, and closed toe shoes/boots.

Before beginning mowing – Clean debris from mower, such as sticks, old grass, papers, and other debris before starting.

Before beginning mowing – Clean and remove sticks, rocks, toys, from the lawn surface before beginning.

Make sure your child is not being distracted by other playmates, people, or animals

Do not buy a mower with a reverse. Most injuries occur when a mower is put into reverse and backs over a child.

If an injury does occur call 911 immediately, and if there is an open wound, apply pressure to slow/stop the bleeding.
