A Leaderless Mass Movement?

A Leaderless Mass Movement?

We see that The Iranian supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has declared that Mis Hossein Moussavi will be held responsible for the damages of the on-going post election protests. The Ayatollah has declared that eleven per cent of the vote will be recounted. But many Iranians opt for a complete recount, or in fact.a new election

Many Iranians we know have taken to the streets, day and night, protesting the election that placed Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the Iranian presidency. When police have curtailed street protestation, the Iranian supporters of Moussavi have gone to the rooftops, loudly booming in the night, "God is Great" in support of their leader, artist, philosopher, and champion of the poor and of the rich, Mis Moussavi.

We must conclude then that the revered Ayatollah views the outrage in the streets not as a protest of an election, but rather as a potential overthrow of his authority, and government. The demonstrators, now forbidden to demonstrate, have been held at bay with water cannon, and tear gas.

In addition, the shrine of former Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini has been bombed.

TEHRAN (Reuters) -
"Two people were killed in a suicide bombing on Saturday at the shrine of Iran's revolutionary leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, state television said. Iran's English-language Press TV said eight people were also wounded in the bombing, which was likely to inflame anger among Iranians who revere the founder of the Islamic Republic."

There are varying interpretations of this bombing. If conducted by the Moussavi supporters it indeed seems to portent a revolution.
But we are told, Moussavi in recent days said that if sought for punishment, he would take refuge in that same shrine. This is a long enduring Iranian tradition; revolutionaries and mal-contents taking shelter in the shrine are sheltered from prosecution.
If that is the case, the government itself may have destroyed the Khomeini Shrine to prevent in fact and in theory this hope of refuge.
A third possibility is that the shrine may have been bombed by long standing anti-regime groups not necessarily directly involved with the specific issue of the elections.

But my thought is that the Bombing seems to suggest a real indication of momentum for overthrow.

In America we have seen lately, since the Obama administration, a softening in the positions of the Iranian Presidency, as Ahmadinejad has expressed hope for peace, and reason. And observers have said that Moussavi is in support of individual rights, woman's rights, and in support of closer relations with the United States. It comes as a surprise then that at the well attended Prayer meeting at Tehran University there were some inconsistent displays.

From: The Iranian Council on Foreign Relations:
" Supreme Leader Speaks Out"
"Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, backed the results of his country's disputed presidential election and demanded an end to street protests in an address to the Iranian people today. Speaking to a crowd of thousands of people at Tehran University, in his first public statement since last Friday's vote, Khamenei praised the ballot as an "epic moment that became a historic moment." He also directly called for an end to the demonstrations that have bedeviled Iran for the past several days, saying "street challenge is not acceptable." Khamenei also expressed support (BBC) for incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, saying his and Ahmadinejad's views on foreign affairs and social issues are closely aligned."

The Inconsistent displays? We are told by the American News people that at that Prayer Meeting , the assembled Iranian Clerics and Religious joined the Ayatollah in repeated chants of "Death to America!", and "Death to Israel". This in any case does not suggest an easing of tensions.

Iranian People , many of them students, rioting in the street, possibly intent of the overthrow of a government they feel has not supported their vote, may be influenced by a real fear of war with Israel, of war with The United States. Perhaps they would rather resist the Iranian Government, overthrow the Iranian Government, then face the consideration of Israeli or American Bombs falling on their city and their nation.
