Learn How to Download and Store YouTube Videos on Your Hard Drive

Here are step by step instructions on how you can download YouTube videos and store them on your hard drive.

YouTube is a free online video streaming service that allows users to view and share videos. Although YouTube does not support video downloads, you can store YouTube videos on your hard drive with these open source tools.

Downloading YouTube Videos

To download YouTube videos, you can use a free open source application such as YouTube Downloader or VideoDownloader Plugin for Firefox.

* YouTube Downloader
YouTube Downloader is a web-based tool that allows you to copy and paste a specific YouTube video url into the search box, and it will generate a downloadable file of that video.
* VideoDownloader Plugin for Firefox
VideoDownloader Plugin for Firefox allows you to download YouTube videos directly from the browser by following these steps.

1. Once you have installed the plugin, display the YouTube video you wish to download
2. Click on the VideoDownloader icon in the Firefox browser
3. Press and hold the Control key as you click the Download Link button
4. From the contextual menu, click on Save Link As
5. Save the file to the location you wish, and change the filename to a recognizable name with a .flv extension (such as recoil_strange_hours.flv)

Viewing Downloaded YouTube Videos

Once you have downloaded the YouTube videos you want, you can view them with the open source application VLC Media Player. Simply open VLC Media Player, drag your .flv file into the VLC Media Player window and enjoy!

Note that there are Mac and Windows versions for these applications, and the steps are nearly identical.
