What does that say?

While it is true that Internet communication and text messaging have a language of their own, it is not all that difficult to decipher.

There are certain catch phrases used regularly and with a bit of practice they should be relatively simple for you to master.

The acronyms are basically made up of the beginning letters of each word in a phrase. Sometimes numbers are also added to make typing shorter and abbreviated. Occasionally letters of the alphabet could be substituted for a word .

Some examples are

brb = be right back

ttyl = talk to you later

cul8r = see you later

afk = away from keyboard

oic = oh I see

b4 = before

g2g = got to go

<3u = love you, the <3 = a heart

Many times instead of typing out a long word, some of the vowels are eliminated to make shorter but still easy to understand. Some examples of this are

2mrw = tomorrow

mtg = meeting

cngrats = congratulations

So you see they are fairly simple. Some of them have variations, but once you get a grasp of the basic language you can most likely figure them out. If you'd like to check out a list of the more common ones, take a look at this site.

It's amazing how many smiley faces

people have come up with--a guy with spikey hair or a goatee; someone sticking their tongue out, smoking a pipe, or vomiting, etc. etc.

These are really good to

These are really good to know not just to communicate yourself, but to oversee what your children are saying to their friends. This is a good thing to keep to yourself until a situation might arise when You might have to reveal that you understand the language. Your child should have a look of shock on their face when they discover that you knew what was going on all along. Kat
