Leprechaun Park | The Smallest Park in the World

Leprechaun Park | The Smallest Park in the World

I cannot begin to name all of the things I love about Portland, Oregon. Moonstruck Chocolate Cafes are close to the top of the list along with Powell's City of Books and Saturday Market under the Burnside Bridge.

But as St. Patrick's Day draws near, my thoughts usually turn to Mill Ends Park, better known as Leprechaun Park, which is located at SW Naito Parkway and SW Taylor. This park holds a Guinness record as the smallest in the world. At a mere 2 feet in diameter, it is the preferred park of leprechauns, butterflies and snails.

The park started out as a hole in which a future light pole was to be placed, circa 1946. When the pole never arrived, Dick Fagan, a columnist with The Oregon Journal, planted flowers in the hole and started writing about strange events that were taking place there such as leprechaun parties and snail races.

To this day, the park is the go-to site for many St. Patrick Day festivities and in case you were wondering, it was dedicated as an official City of Portland park in 1976.

Here is more history about the tiny park. Enjoy!

Funnest Park?

Perhaps it should not only be named the smallest, but the funnest also! How many parks have such a mystical world that people talk about attached to them. I love how there are concerts in the park (imagine!)and the park has had things like a Ferris Wheel and swimming pool added to it? Sounds like the type of attraction that helps to keep our childhood imaginations alive. We all could use more of that. Thanks for sharing! If I ever make it to Portland, I will definitely have to stop by and take a ride on the Ferris Wheel. ;) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Earn for Your Writing on Xomba Earn for Your Writing on Bukisa Check Out My Writing on Bukisa

J.E.H., you probably drove by it a hundred times

and never knew it. The local news will probably mention it on St Patrick's Day. I don't know about the Firefighter's one...it's a city park? Always something knew to learn around here. Peace, Mia NW Please visit my recent posts here Get paid to be a xombie! Join us here

Leprechaun Park? World's Smallest? In Portland, Oregon...

Lived in Portland for 30 years and drove cab here for 10 years and I had never heard of this park. I had always thought the smallest park in town was the Firefighters Memorial up near SW 18th and W. Burnside... There is always something new to learn...Thanks for the info... ____________________ It does matter what you believe, but, what you believe does not matter if you do not act upon your beliefs. you can not vote on the truth --Pope John Paul II, 1995
