Let's Hope the Toad's Win!
posted August 29, 2009 - 11:08amDo you remember finding and catching your first frog? Did you ever keep tadpoles in a fish tank? The joys of simple childhood pastimes may not continue for one very special frog; the Wyoming frog.
In Wyoming, on the Shore of Mortenson Lake, herpetologist Val Hornyak is keeping a watchful eye on the decline and now slow incline in the numbers of this frog. The Wyoming frog only grows as large as a golf ball and it has been under attack from the fungus for nearly a decade.
Zoologists and pathologists across the country are also working with Mr. Hornyak by breeding the Wyoming frog in captivity and then releasing them into nearby lakes where there is no fungus. However, even with this assistance the numbers were not increasing as fast as desired.
The hope, however, is that this little frog will rally on its own. The numbers of frogs surviving and reproducing in Mortenson Lake seem to be slowly on the rise! Hurray for the froggies!
