Lewis Hamilton took full advantage of McLaren team-mate Fernando Alonso’s plight in Hungary as he held off a race-long challenge from Kimi Raikkonen to take his third Formula 1 victory.

The championship leader extended his title lead over the Spaniard to seven points after leading every single lap from pole position at the Hungaroring – although that only told half the story as he had to withstand constant pressure from his Ferrari rival.

After bolting straight past BMW’s Nick Heidfeld off the start, Raikkonen stayed true to his word that the Italian squad would be much faster in the race and hounded Hamilton for 70 laps.

But Lewis as showed consistently in his debut season, he can cope with the pressure than any of his more experienced rivals may throw at him and duly took a fantastic, and more importantly crucial, victory.

Heidfeld took a strong third, although he came under massive pressure from Alonso in the closing stages.

The world champion had spent most of the race stuck behind Ralf Schumacher’s similarly two-stopping Toyota and was only found clear air following his final stop.

Robert Kubica rounded up another solid day for BMW with fifth place, with Schumacher ending his impressive weekend in sixth.

Nico Rosberg finally returned to the points finish for Williams, although his three-stop strategy didn’t play out as hoped as he dropped several positions after his final visit to the pit lane.

Renault’s Heikki Kovalainen continued his recent good form by coming up from 11th to score the final point.
