posted September 15, 2008 - 2:52pmLiberty University is an independent, fundamentalist Baptist four-year university located in Lynchburg, Virginia. Liberty was founded in 1971 by the conservative evangelist Jerry Falwell, and was originally called Lynchburg Baptist College.
Liberty University has an undergraduate study body of more than 10,000 students. It is said that Liberty students living on campus are required to attend convocation three times a week, at which they participate in worship and often hear from a wide range of speakers. Some of the past speakers have included John McCain, Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush, and the Rev. Billy Graham.

In athletics, Liberty's sports teams, called the Flames, are members of the NCAA Division I-AA level Big South Conference. Perhaps the biggest athletic success for the university came during the 2004-2005 basketball season when their women's team, the Lady Flames, made it to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Women's Division I tournament. The team was led by 6 foot 8 center Katie Feenstra, who currently plays for the Atlanta Dream of the WNBA.
