Country Music and Dad

Country Music and Dad

I grew up on country music. My dad played back up lead with a guy who after dad left, the band made it big, and stayed in the charts for many years. All of my dad’s side of the family played guitars and sang.

Family reunions, BBQ†s, or just going somewhere to visit, there seemed to always be someone with a guitar. My dad could play up beat, or moan the blues with the best of them.

After dads truck wreck, dad was hospitalized for almost two years and then bed rest for a long time. His body was nearly crushed, and he had forty percent brain damage. Dad had to retrain himself to play again. I watched him fumble with the strings until he learned every chord.

Early one morning, I heard him playing and singing. I remember starting to cry, because this was the household that remembered Dad playing his Gibson Guitar, and mom getting breakfast ready.

We always had breakfast at about six a.m., and it was a breakfast that you sink your teeth into. It was usually biscuits, gravy, eggs, and potatoes. Mom always had a hot breakfast for us long before school started. We’d get the dishes cleaned up and went to school.

There was always music in my house. Dad was either playing it, or mom had the radio on. Mom wasn’t big on T.V. She would turn the radio on and do her house work, and sometimes when she thought no one was looking, she danced across the floor. I guess that’s where I get it from; I’m not much on T.V. either.

My dad is no longer here since he went to heaven, and most of my aunts and uncles have done the same. I would give most anything to hear them all play together again. I sure wish I would’ve recorded them.

Memories

Another good read, James. It's too bad that everybody can't have happy memories of past family times. It will be interesting to read more of your past memories. Growing up I was never into country music, but as I grew older I realized that I liked all kinds of music, country included. I now have a substantial collection of country music, including but not limited to Hank Williams, Marty Robins, Patsy Cline and others. I didn't get to listen to my records very often, as my wife, at the time, claimed she wasn't into anything country. Anyway, keep the stories coming, they are very interesting. Richard

A lot of familiar memories..

My dad too was country though he could not sing nor was he musically inclined (and I seem to have taken after him in many respects), BUT his best friend was and had a band that we hung around all the time. Us kids called him "uncle". And of course it was country. In my teens I went total rock in the 70's...but secretly loved those country tunes. Into my 20's I reverted back to those country songs and the memories. Your story brought back some good memories. I think I will call my dad before he too has his time to go be with the Lord. I am blessed to have him on earth but dont see him much. Time for a phone call and maybe a trip. Thank you so much for posting this. Awesome story. Awesome memories. Loved it. +1 Mrs. Wdzzz For more articles by this author click here

Childhood memories of family

Although my memories are tainted with confusion and sadness, I do have some wonderful ones that I truly cherish. My mom passed on just before my 19th birthday and I am still saddened when I think of it, but I cheer myself up by remembering the fun. Like my brother, my mom and I dancing in the living room to Elvis Presely, seeing who could shake our hips the most. Doing the "bump" to some disco music and even the time when we were all sitting in the living room watching tv and mom sneezed, emitting a fart with it! Oh how we all laughed!! I grew up on Country music as well and in high school Barbara Mandrell had a song, "I was Country, When Country Wasn't Cool." My friends dedicated that song as my theme song. (Today, those same friends are country now!!) Thank you for sharing your memories and even though you may not have a physical recording, your heart and mind will play it for you!
